A new action thriller will follow “the lineage of nonstop combat films like John Wick, The Raid, and Ong Bak,” as it delivers “elite fight choreography that will leave fans of the genre breathless.” For any genre fan, that should be more than enough to tempt you to watch the newly released trailer for next month’s Assassin.
Following a former gangster who finds himself tasked with the titular killer mission and soon finds himself on the run and at the center of a revolution, Assassin takes the intense brutality of John Wick and The Raid, combines it with the stylized action thrills of the Kingsman franchise and Kung Fu Hustle, and transports all of it to the 1930s. Assassin looks like it should satisfy every fan of all of the above…and with a period twist. Assassin also clocks in at a white-knuckle 90s minutes, meaning the action outing won’t mess around before getting to the knife-throwing, bullet-dodging, elbow-striking action delights we all want to see.
Assassin is all set to land on digital streaming platforms for rental or ownership on April 17, 2026, courtesy of Omnibus Entertainment. In the meantime, alongside the newly released trailer, you can check out the official synopsis for Assassin below…
Shanghai. 1930s. Occupied and on the brink of war.
When elite fighter Mubai is recruited for a top-secret assassination, he’s thrown into brutal battle against the Japanese military machine. Hunted through city streets, train lines, and enemy strongholds, Mubai fights his way through ambushes, explosions, and brutal close-quarters combat to reach a single target who could change history. With time running out and bodies piling up, survival depends on speed, skill, and nerve.
Following in the lineage of nonstop combat films like John Wick, The Raid, and Ong Bak, Assassin is a relentless action thriller featuring elite fight choreography that will leave fans of the genre breathless.
While comparisons to the likes of such modern action masterpieces as The Raid and John Wick have become commonplace, some efforts really do earn it. And Assassin looks to be one such example. Centering on an elite killer on a deadly assassin mission who finds himself wildly outnumbered, on the run, and fighting to survive against impossible odds, likening Assassin to the beloved and bloody misadventures of Baba Yaga inarguably tracks with both the story being told and the expertly choreographed action on display.
Directed by Zhou Jiuquin from a screenplay written by Lin Huang, Assassin stars Jinhao Guo, Ray Lui, Di Wang, and Ming Wang. Produced by Xuanyi Wang, Assassin also boasts a stunt team that includes action choreographer Zhengguang Lu, action director Guan Su, and stunt rigging coordinator Wenting Guo, along with stunt performers Qiankun Li, Yi Pan, Feng Shu, Peng Xiang, Ruiyan Xie, Long Yang, Wenpu Yang, Zhiyong Yang, Zongwei Yang, and Yangshan Zheng.
