Liverpool star Cody Gakpo is doubtful to feature against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday
Liverpool are set to host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday, as Arne Slot and Co. look to return to winning ways in the Premier League.
The Reds extended their lead at the summit of the table despite dropping two points in gut-wrenching fashion against Everton in midweek. They were just moments away from sealing all three points in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, only for James Tarkowski to pop up from nowhere and smash the equalising goal past Alisson Becker deep into stoppage time.
Ugly scenes followed after the full-time whistle in the blue half of Merseyside, with referee Michael Oliver brandishing red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure. Arne Slot was also shown the red card after he confronted Oliver.
The draw with Everton ended Liverpool’s three-game winning run in the Premier League. However, they still enjoy a seven-point lead at the top of the table and will be overwhelming favourites heading into the game against relegation-threatened Wolves.
But heading into Sunday’s Premier League fixture, Arne Slot’s side faces a bit of injury concern. The Liverpool head coach admitted uncertainty surrounding Cody Gakpo’s availability against Vitor Pereira’s side.
The Dutchman sustained a knock in the second half against Everton and was subbed off in the 69th minute. As a result, Slot has termed the forward “doubtful” for the Wolves game.
“Cody is a bit of a doubt as well, so let’s wait [to see] how he is today. I had to take him off because of an injury, because he got a knock, so let’s see how he is today,” Slot said in his pre-match press conference at the AXA Training Centre on Friday.
Cody Gakpo has undoubtedly been one of Liverpool’s top performers this season, more comfortable on the left flank, with 16 goals and five assists in 36 appearances. He has featured in all but one game so far in the Premier League and Champions League, as well as starting every game in the Carabao Cup—where the forward opened the scoring in Liverpool’s 4-0 rout of Spurs in the return leg of the semis last week.

The Netherlands international has scored eight goals in his last seven appearances at Anfield, so his potential unavailability against Wolves would be a big blow for Slot. If Gakpo does miss out as seemingly expected, it could be an opportunity for either Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota to come into Slot’s XI and lead the Liverpool attack.
