The Witcher star Anya Chalotra addresses Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt in Rivia in season 4. Henry Cavill played Geralt in the first three seasons of the hit Netflix series, but after he exited the show, Hemsworth was recast in the role.
This marks a significant change for The Witcher‘s cast, who have worked with Cavill since season 1. Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, shared many scenes with Cavill in previous seasons, with the two characters navigating one of the show’s most important relationships both before and after meeting Ciri (Freya Allan).
ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley spoke with Chalotra about being one of the show’s original cast members and asked if Hemsworth brought out any new sides of Yennefer in season 4. Chalotra reveals that even though she and Geralt do not have many scenes together in season 4, she feels that Hemsworth brings a “calm” and “safety” that Yennefer needs as she navigates her fear. Check out Chalotra’s comments below:
Oh God, yeah. Unfortunately, we don’t have that much time together this season, but there’s a real calm you (Liam Hemsworth) bring, and which I think in this… and safety that I think I felt as an actor also, Yennefer needed. She’s not scared for herself, but she’s scared of something far more important than her. And the only person who could probably relate to that is his Geralt. So yeah, I’d say that was played by you. That was very helpful.
Yennefer and Geralt were on separate parts of the Continent during The Witcher season 3’s ending, which explains why they will not be sharing scenes together when season 4 begins. Geralt is on a quest to find Ciri, where he is joined by Jaskier (Joey Batey) and Laurence Fishburne’s new character, Regis. Meanwhile, Yennefer now leads the Brotherhood’s surviving mages after the death of Tissaia (MyAnna Buring).
This is not the first time that the show has separated Yennefer and Geralt since their complex relationship began. A defining part of their relationship is that even when they are not together, there is an intimate understanding they have of each other, and now they are also united in their mission to protect Ciri and the Continent from Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), Emperor Emhyr (Bart Edwards), and other nefarious forces.
Despite the recast and limited screen time together in The Witcher season 4, Chalotra’s comments confirm that the deep bond, understanding, and shared purpose between Yennefer and Geralt remains. The “calm” and “safety” Hemsworth brings to the role helps ground Yennefer as she fights for the future of magic and the Continent.
Establishing a new, yet familiar dynamic between Hemsworth and Chalotra is important not only for season 4, but in setting up season 5, which will bring the series to its conclusion. Geralt, Yennefer, and their relationship are integral to the show’s endgame, which begins with The Witcher season 4 and Hemsworth entering the show.
All episodes of The Witcher season 4 come to Netflix on October 30.
