Antonio Cordero set for surprise move – Big claims from Spain and ‘source close’ to player

When it comes to loan spells in Europe for Newcastle United youngsters, there’s been more recent misses than their have been hits.

Antonio Cordero is a player who will be hoping to buck the trend, showcasing his immense potential and just why we signed him this summer.

Since arriving from Malaga on a free transfer, the expectation has been that he would be loaned out immediately for first team minutes, unlike other new arrival Seung-soo Park, who will remain on Tyneside to develop.

A switch to Ajax was touted, but reports in Spain now suggest another European destination is now all but agreed:

According to Spanish outlet SportDirect Radio, Antonio Cordero is set to join Belgian side KVC Westerlo on loan for the 2025/26 season.

The Malaga-based media channel has this information from a ‘source close to the player’, suggesting they have information that the teenager will spend the coming campaign in the Jupiler Pro League

Previous reports had speculated that the 18-year-old was set to join Dutch giants Ajax for the season, who were one of the big clubs we beat in the race to sign the winger.

Westerlo finished 9th in the Belgian top flight last season, narrowly missing out on qualifying for European football.

Only one footballer has ever played for both ourselves and the Belgian side: Algerian striker Islam Slimani, who managed just four appearances for us during a very brief loan spell.

Whilst the plan always seemed to be that Cordero was going out on loan, a midtable Belgian side wouldn’t have been high up on many fans’ predictions of where the highly-rated Spaniard would end up.

Coming off the back of a solid campaign for his country at the U-19 EUROs and talk of a potential move to Ajax, Westerlo may seem slightly underwhelming.

But minutes are most important here, as we’ve seen the likes of Garang Kuol and Miodrag Pivas struggle for game time in the Netherlands and potentially lose confidence in the process.
