Anthony Gordon return date becomes clear after latest update on Sunday

Just when it seemed everything was going Newcastle’s way this past fortnight, Anthony Gordon looked like he picked up a hip injury on international duty – but things may not be as bad as they seem.

Coming on as a substitute during England’s 2-0 win against Albania, Gordon went down late with an injury, and was seen hobbling around Wembley after Friday night’s game.

But better news has come out today which should hopefully still see Gordon available for Newcastle once his current suspension comes to an end.

The FA released a statement early on Sunday morning confirming that Gordon had withdrawn from the Three Lions camp ahead of the game against Latvia, and would be undergoing assessment at Newcastle over the extent of his injury.

However, the Mail’s Craig Hope shed some positive light on the situation, confirming that after an early scan, Gordon’s hip injury wasn’t as severe as it initially looked.

Writing on X, Hope posted “I understand the hip injury isn’t as serious as first feared. He had a scan yesterday and the news wasn’t too bad.”

With that in mind, along with the fact Gordon is already suspended for our next game at home to Brentford on Wednesday 2nd April, it seems highly likely that he return to action for our trip to Leicester on Monday 7th April.

Gordon, who would likely have been rotated into the England starting XI over Marcus Rashford for Monday night’s World Cup qualifier will be a big miss for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Speaking on Gordon’s departure, the German wished the winger a healthy recovery, expressing some disappointment that he wasn’t able to get the most out of Gordon during the break.

“It’s just a matter of pain. There’s a big bruise around the hip region and he’s unable to walk properly.”

“It’s a shame because he had a good chance to start and I’m sad that he is now out. He was so happy to play and get some minutes for us. He had a red card (against Brighton), then he got sick – he came a bit late into camp – and gets his minutes and gets straightaway injured.”

Now home and with his family, Gordon looks to be getting some much-needed rest and recovery before his eventual return to first team football for the Magpies.

Gordon injury aside, the international break so far arguably could not have gone much better for Eddie Howe and his side.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes is suspended for Brazil’s crunch fixture against Argentina, which will allow the main man in midfield to also get some much-deserved time to recuperate for the rest of the month.

England stars Dan Burn and Tino Livramento have never seen their stock higher, with Burn’s successful debut on Friday night being highly praised, and Tino likely to start for the Three Lions against Latvia.

Sandro Tonali’s big game resume and performance continues to grow, starring for the Azzurri with the opening goal in their game against Germany – constantly full of energy, Tonali’s performances will seem his raring to go ahead of the return to club football.

And Lewis Miley was handed the captain’s armband for the England U-19s for their fixtures, showing how far the 18-year-old has come since his return from injury earlier in the season – a clear sign of a big future ahead not only for Howe’s senior squad, but the England National Team itself.
