Anthony Gordon was a man on a mission last night.
Starting in that No 9 role once again, the Newcastle United star scored FOUR goals in our 6-1 win over Qarabag in the Champions League, netting two from open play and dispatching two spot-kicks: one of which he did brilliantly to win.
He’s now the second top scorer in this season’s Champions League, netting 10 goals in nine outings, with Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe (13) the only player to have scored more.
Speaking to The Chronicle after the match, the 24-year-old was asked about recent reports linking him with a potential move to Liverpool or Arsenal, with the pair tipped to make a summer move for the England international.
Responding to the rumours, which he claimed to be unaware of, he said: “(Rumours) About me? I haven’t seen them. What are they saying?”
“It’s the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do (names out of the hat). I haven’t heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media).”
Asked if he is instead focused on Newcastle United and becoming a ‘legend’ on Tyneside, he added: “Of course. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.”
“I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now. You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that (before) and I am not going to do that now.”
The last line feels like a pretty clear reflection on what happened in the summer of 2024, as Gordon previously admitted that a failed move to Liverpool after Euro 2024 messed with his head and negatively impacted his performances in the 2024/25 season.
