Alexander Isak’s Newcastle teammate Anthony Gordon “hopes everyone gets what they want” from an ongoing saga over the Swedish striker’s future.
Liverpool have now seen their first official bid for Isak turned down, with Newcastle rejecting an offer worth in the region of £110 million.
While the expectation is that a deal could be reached, the 25-year-old’s current club are holding out for their valuation of £150 million while otherwise insisting he is not for sale.
Isak has been absent from the squad since it became clear that he was pushing for a move to Liverpool, which has clearly impacted on the mood at Newcastle.
But speaking to the Mail‘s Craig Hope, Gordon used experience of intense speculation over his own future in the past to take a philosophical view on Isak’s situation.
“I would never lie. It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally. I was there, I wasn’t playing,” the winger said, having been close to a move to Liverpool last summer.
“Then I had the transfer stuff. With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window.
“It didn’t happen. I had to get my head around [thinking I was leaving] to begin with, and then to get my head around it again [when it didn’t happen] was hard.
“I’m a human being. It’s really difficult. That is why I understand what Alex is going through.
“I feel for him. He will be going through a lot. The club is going through a lot. I hope everyone gets what they want in the end.”
Throughout his interview, Gordon spoke more of the human aspect of life as a footballer and that bleeds through in his evaluation of Isak’s future.
While he clearly would prefer to keep the Swede as his teammate at St James’ Park there appears an acceptance that the situation should be resolved to suit his desires as an individual.
That, of course, will depend on Liverpool and Newcastle being able to strike an agreement, as football is now a big-money business with players considered assets.
But while Isak may have infuriated Newcastle supporters with his actions in recent weeks that does not seem to have extended to those close to him such as Gordon.
Liverpool are likely to return with a new bid for their priority centre-forward target in the coming days, with the possibility that they can land a deal at around £135 million.
