Ana de Armas is already one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars, but her popularity is set to rise as she transforms into a famous fitness influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers. The actress has signed on to star in Sweat, a new psychological thriller directed by J Blakeson, adapting Magnus von Horn’s Polish feature of the same name that was part of the official selection at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival.
De Armas will play a character named Emma Kent, a fitness influencer who aspires to become a social media star like her idol, Kat Highbrook, per The Hollywood Reporter. However, when an encounter with Kat takes a disastrous turn, Emma finds herself in a perilous situation with Trent, an obsessive fan whose infatuation has reached alarming levels. His unhinged devotion compels Emma to confront the exhaustive demands of her lifestyle and question the lengths that she is willing to go to in her desperate pursuit of fame and celebrity.
The film will explore the dark side of fame, following several other Hollywood explorations of the same subject. In recent years, the roster has expanded to include Demi Moore’s breathtaking body horror triumph The Substance, Max Minghella’s sophomore directorial feature Shell, and Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biographical drama Blonde (which famously earned de Armas her first Oscar nomination).
