Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Trusty, McKennie, and more

Auston Trusty delivered one of his finer shifts of the 2025-26 season on Thursday as Celtic stayed alive for a spot in the UEFA Europa League playoffs.

Trusty scored once as Celtic held on for a 2-2 draw against Serie A side Bologna on Thursday, jumping to 24th place in the league table. The American defender scored the Scottish club’s second goal in the match while also logging a strong 90 minutes in defense.

Reo Hatate opened the scoring after just six minutes, giving Celtic a 1-0 lead.

Despite Hatate’s later sending off after the half-hour mark, Trusty doubled Celtic’s advantage just before halftime. The U.S. men’s national team centerback arrived at the back post to poke home a corner kick, celebrating his second goal of the season.

Martin O’Neill’s squad could not hang on though for all three points as Bologna found the back of the net twice after halftime to share the spoils. Trusty finished the match with nine duels won and 17 defensive clearances, with one of those coming off of the goal-line.

Celtic will head into Matchday 8 needing a victory surely against FC Utrecht to remain in the competition.

However, the reigning SPFL champions will return to league play first on Sunday against league-leading Hearts.

Elsewhere, Weston McKennie scored in Juventus’ Champions League win. Haji Wright scored Coventry City’s winning goal for the second-consecutive match. Phallon Tullis-Joyce helped Manchester United reach the England League Cup Final. Tanner Tessmann helped Lyon to a crucial Europa League win in Switzerland.
