When she was in her early twenties, Amanda Seyfried brought free-spirited romantic Sophie Sheridan to life in Mamma Mia!. Based on the hit ABBA musical, the first film follows the future bride as she secretly invites three men to her wedding that she read about in her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) diary, in hopes of discovering that one of them is her real father. The highly-anticipated sequel delves deeper into Donna’s adventure-filled life in the 1970s, while in the present, a pregnant Sophie prepares to reopen her mother’s hotel following her death.
Now, nearly two decades after the premiere of the original movie, Seyfried is more than ready to head back to Greece for round three.
“I grew up in that world and people really love it,” she exclusively shares with MovieWeb. “The set is joyous itself … Having that joy, you know, reverberate again through the world is just all positive … We always need to go back to what brings us joy.”
The Housemaid star, 40, says the franchise has always been a “cozy home” for her as she teases that one of the biggest pulls to return to the beloved franchise is to be welcomed back into the “open arms” of her family of cast members, including Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters “and hopefully Meryl [Streep],” who she is eager to have reprise her role despite the fact that her character tragically passed away prior to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
“It’s almost been 10 years, and we said we wouldn’t wait 10 years to do it. And it’s just, it’s about f***ing time.”
“I love the idea of picking up where I left off and/or seeing where my character is as a mother,” she adds. Seyfried herself shares two children with her husband, actor Thomas Sadoski. They welcomed their daughter, Nina, in 2017, and their son, who is also named Thomas, in 2020. “I love being a mother, so I love portraying a mother.”
What to Know About ‘Mamma Mia! 3’ So Far
Seyfried has admitted that she usually prefers “original content” to sequels, but when it comes to Mamma Mia 3, she’s all in. Earlier this year, she told Interview magazine that she’d do a third film “in a heartbeat.” A few months later, she was finally able to confirm that Mamma Mia 3 was officially “happening,” telling ET that, ideally, filming would begin in summer 2026.
“It’s going to have to take a lot of people’s schedules aligning and the story being right, and you know, making sure that Benny [Anderson] and Björn [Ulvaeus] from ABBA know which songs they want to do.”
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Brosnan also hinted that the third installment could answer the burning question on every Mamma Mia! fan’s mind: Who is Sophie’s real father?
“I think you’ll have to wait for the next movie,” he said at the time. “I think leave that one right there. I know who it is, but I don’t want to be a killjoy.”
