Hunter Schafer only began acting in 2019. Before then, she was a famous model who had done campaigns with Converse, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Versace. But that changed when she was cast as Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria, the role that saw her skyrocket to fame. Jules is one of the main characters in the series, having an intense friendship with the show’s lead, Rue, played by Zendaya. Schafer is electrifying in the role and received critical acclaim. She eventually became a co-executive producer of the series.
Schafer has also ventured into film, starring in 4 to date. While the fan-led campaign to have her play Zelda in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda live-action film didn’t work out, Schafer does have more roles lined up in the meantime. She co-stars in Mother Mary, the upcoming Anne Hathaway film, and will also appear in the TV series Blade Runner 2099. Anyone wanting to see Schafer on the big screen can look back at her previous 4 films to show off her acting talents, ranked according to their Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ (2023)
64% Tomatometer
The Hunger Games was a cultural phenomenon when the original trilogy of books was released in the late 2000s – early 2010s. Hollywood jumped on board and released the first film in 2012, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The original books by Suzanne Collins were covered in four films, with Mockingjay: Part 2 premiering in 2015. Collins wrote a prequel novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which was released in 2020. Three years later, the film premiered with Schafer playing Tigris Snow, the cousin of (eventual President) Coriolanus Snow, played by Tom Blyth.
Tigris is Coriolanus’ confidante, and she works as a model and fashion designer, a role Schafer was able to bring her own expertise to. The film looks at the 10th Hunger Games, when Coriolanus was a mentor to District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zegler. The movie was directed by Francis Lawrence, who had directed the most recent three Hunger Games films. The film was met with middling reviews from critics, as it currently has a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it went over much better with audiences, as fans gave it an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score. It made $349 million at the global box office.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ (2024)
71% Tomatometer
Yorgos Lanthimos has become a filmmaker who demands a lot of attention when a new film arrives. After hits like The Lobster, The Favourite, and Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness was his most recently released film. It is an anthology film that features three different stories. Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Yorgos Stefanakos, and Mamoudou Athie all appear as different characters in each story. Schafer appears in the final story as a supporting character.
Her role is as an interviewee of Stone and Plemons’ characters. They are interested in finding a person who can revive the dead. Schafer’s Anna proves to be unsatisfactory for their purposes. The film’s stories are all loosely linked, but mainly are separated. It was met with generally favorable reviews from critics, as it has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were much more split on it, earning it a 50% audience score.

In one of 2024’s most insane body horror thriller films, Hunter Schafer takes center stage. Cuckoo was written and directed by Tilman Singer and features Schafer as Gretchen, a teenager who moves in with her father, stepmother, and half-sister after her own mother dies. They move to a village in the Bavarian Alps while her father is helping build a hotel there. The owner of the hotel offers her a job as a front desk clerk to help her get acclimated to the area. Soon, bewildering things start to occur that make Gretchen suspicious of the village.
As the story progresses, the true culprit of the strange occurrences is revealed, and Gretchen must fight for her life and those around her against the evil that has been created. With a unique twist, one that has to be seen to be believed, Cuckoo provides a great star vehicle for Schafer. Dan Stevens, Marton Csokas, Jan Bluthardt, and Jessica Henwick costar in the film. Schafer was nominated for Best Lead Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards. The film earned a 79% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes but was much less successful with fans, as it sits with a 59% audience score on the site.

Schafer’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes is Belle, the 2021 Japanese animated science fiction film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda. It looks at Suzu, a quiet teenage girl who is withdrawn from everyday life. Suzu lives a double life, as she is a global pop sensation in “U,” a virtual world where people can be whoever they like. When a menacing creature interrupts her concert, it is chased by vigilantes. This leads Suzu to figure out exactly what the creature is and what it represents.
The film is based on Beauty and the Beast and was released in 2021 in Japan, becoming the third-highest-grossing film that year. The movie was recorded in Japanese and English for global release. Schafer voices Ruka Watanabe, Suzu’s classmate and friend. Ruka is one of the more popular girls at school and has a crush on Kamishin. The movie has been lauded by critics and fans, earning 95% and 94% across critics’ and audience scores respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.
