Real Sociedad will have been celebrating the news of Liverpool agreeing to pay Newcastle United the largest transfer fee ever paid by an English club.
The Newcastle United owners banking £130m from the deal (see below) that has now been made public.
Newcastle United agreeing a transfer fee that sees them receive more than twice as much money as they paid Real Sociedad in August 2022.
However, that sale three years ago saw a sell-on clause included in the arrangement with the La Liga club, as detailed by Sky Sports (see below).
They reported that the La Liga club receive 10 per cent of any transfer fee Newcastle United receive over £60.5m, plus on top of that; ‘Real Sociedad will also get two per cent through FIFA’s Solidarity Programme, 0.5 per cent for every season he was with the club.’
By my calculations, this means that Real Sociedad will benefit to the tune of at least another £7m, from the £130m that Newcastle United are banking from the Liverpool deal for Alexander Isak.
Sky Sports report detailing Alexander Isak Real Sociedad sell-on clause – 31 July 2025:
‘If Isak were to leave Newcastle, his former club would receive 10 per cent of every euro above a €70m (£60.5m) transfer fee.
Sociedad will also get two per cent through FIFA’s Solidarity Programme, 0.5 per cent for every season he was with the club.
Isak joined the Spanish club in 2019 from Borussia Dortmund, spending three years with the La Liga side before joining Newcastle in the summer of 2022 for a club-record £63m fee.’
The Mag report – Earlier this Monday (1 September 2025) morning:
Alexander Isak will become a Liverpool player on Monday, after a transfer was agreed with the Newcastle United owners.
The striking striker will have his medical today and then complete the deal.
Newcastle United will bank £130m.
A new record transfer fee paid by a Premier League club.
Luke Edwards of The Telegraph on the Alexander Isak sale:
‘Newcastle United have agreed a British record £130m deal with Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak.
The Sweden international is due to travel to Merseyside on Monday for a medical but a full agreement is now in place to conclude the transfer saga of the summer.
Telegraph Sport revealed that majority stakeholders Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund were, for the first time, willing to cash in on their star player as long as the money was good enough.
The talks, which had been conducted amicably between PIF and Liverpool’s owners over the weekend, have led to the reigning Premier League champions agreeing to Newcastle’s demands.’
David Ornstein of The Athletic on the Alexander Isak deal:
‘Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
The deal is worth £130million ($176m) to Newcastle due to solidarity payments and will cost Liverpool £125m.
It will set a new Premier League transfer record, surpassing Chelsea’s £106m signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023. Liverpool’s purchase of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer amounted to a total package of £116m, with an initial fee of £100m and £16m in potential bonuses.’
