Alexander Isak latest – Newcastle’s response to new media claims made public

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided an update on Alexander Isak’s future and contract status after rumours this week that the forward has rejected a new deal.

There have been rumours circulating in the media that Isak had turned down Newcastle’s offer to extend his stay on Tyneside, with some claiming the forward is “flattered” by Liverpool’s interest in him.

Other outlets have also talked up a potential part-exchange with the Reds, with one suggesting that Liverpool chiefs would offer cash plus Darwin Nunez for the Swede.

In a post on X, Edwards has rubbished claims that Isak has rejected an offer from the club, suggesting this is total nonsense as the club are yet to open contract talks – planned for the summer – and will not deviate from their ‘not for sale’ stance.

He said: “Newcastle United have not offered Isak a new contract so he hasn’t rejected anything. Club are very calm and advice is to ignore the noise talking about him leaving as he isn’t for sale. A contract extension will be discussed in the summer.”

Our intention to retain the 24-year-old is clear and contract talks were always scheduled to take place during the summer as we look to give Isak a boost on his £145,000 per week contract.

It’s believed extending his contract further would also boosting our PSR stance, stretching out the amortisation value of the £63m deal struck following his club-record arrival from Real Sociedad.

Newcastle’s ‘not for sale’ stance means no asking price has been set, contrary to reports, and Edwards has encouraged fans to ‘ignore to noise’ around his future; which seems apt after ludicrous talk of a £75m price tag from Spain and rumours of a swap deal involving Nunez.

As revealed by Craig Hope at The Mail, Newcastle’s recent pledge is that they will not let their star players leave, no matter whether or not they secure Champions League football. The club are looking to further improve their squad, not sell our best players.

Isak, along with Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon in particular, have been linked with moves away to the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City over the past windows. Talk within the club is focusing on adding to our squad, however, not weakening our position now our PSR situation has improved.

The Magpies appear have two names in particular in mind, with PSV’s Johan Bakayoko and Bournemouth’s Ilia Zabarnyi being watched closely in recent months, according to Mark Douglas of the i.
