Action Movie ‘Old Guy’ Starring Christoph Waltz Is Streaming Success on Starz

Christoph Waltz may have recently played legendary Bond villain Blofeld in two of Daniel Craig’s final movies, but he has appeared in many other movies that are just as worthy of your attention. One of these turns the former Bond bad guy into an action lead, and after being buried on its release in theaters, it is finding success on streaming.

Old Guy is a low-budget action-comedy that co-stars Lucy Liu and Cooper Hoffman and is directed by the man behind Jason Statham’s Mechanic movies, Con Air and The Expendables 2, Simon West. Grossing just $7 million at the box office in February 2025, the movie fell foul of critics who slammed the movie as a complete waste of the talent involved, and declared that perhaps the concept of an aging contract killer returning to the game should be put out of its misery. Audiences, though, massively disagreed.

An aging hit man (Christoph Waltz), love interest (Lucy Liu), and a Gen Z apprentice (Cooper Hoffman) run into big trouble in Belfast.

The synopsis of Old Guy reads, “Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of spunky club manager Anata, Aging contract killer Danny Dolinski is thrilled when The Company pulls him back in the field, but only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg, a prodigy assassin with an attitude.” Has it been done before? Of course. Does that mean it isn’t enjoyable? Certainly not, if you are willing to accept it as the fun action comedy it sets out to be and just go along with the clichés.

The Avenue

While Old Guy did not pull any new tricks at the box office, the film has now found a new audience on Starz and landed at #7 on the global chart. There could be a good reason why the movie is discovering more appreciation on streaming, as audiences were incredibly impressed with the movie and could not have been further away from critics in their reviews of Old Guy on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Tomatometer for the movie sits on a dismal 29%, but the audience Popcornmeter stands at 96%, making it Waltz’s highest-rated film in the eyes of viewers, putting it above Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Alita: Battle Angel and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Naturally, there are several reviewers who just didn’t get the movie, but these are far outweighed by positive reactions, and, as John S. pointed out, “Nice, fun, and well done movie. The critics prove again that they’re overthinking morons. Don’t let the critics stop you from seeing a very good film.” Another review from Arnez C followed this with, “This movie was so much fun I enjoyed the action the antics how can you not like bullets in a frying pan insane this kicked so much ass!”

For fans of West’s other action movies, you should know what to expect by now, and that is probably why many people checking out the movie were not disappointed. Action movies need action, and that is something West does best. Throw in an Oscar-winning lead, and Old Guy is a movie that can really scratch an itch when you just want to watch things go bang.
