A24’s ‘The Brutalist’ With Adrien Brody Lands Max Streaming Release Date

A24’s ‘The Brutalist’ With Adrien Brody Lands Max Streaming Release Date

It’s been a long wait, but The Brutalist has finally received an official streaming release date. Following A24’s streaming deal with HBO and Max, Brady Corbet’s Academy Award-winning film will be headed exclusively to Max starting Friday, May 16. A24 had previously had an agreement with Showtime, which expired in 2023. A variety of films from the production company have made their way to Max’s streaming library, with recent releases like Sing Sing, A Different Man, Heretic, and Queer all hitting the service in the past few months. Now, one of the most talked-about awards season movies will be available to stream soon.

The Brutalist first premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024. It would subsequently receive plenty of praise and critical acclaim, garnering hype for a wide theatrical release after being acquired by A24. A significant part of the discussion surrounding Corbet’s epic about the American dream was the film’s lengthy runtime, clocking in at 3 hours and 35 minutes. The theatrical experience of the film included a 15-minute intermission to give audiences a reprieve, which was another big talking point for moviegoers and creatives on the press tour.

When The Brutalist hits streaming in May, viewers will be able to pause and resume the film as much as they like in order to take in the story how they want. While this may not have been the intended viewing experience, the title on streaming will also help give the film more traction and reinvigorate the conversation around it. The Brutalist was also shot in VistaVision, something that will be harder to experience when streaming at home.

The Lengthy Runtime of ‘The Brutalist’ Is Perfect For Streaming

The Brutalist centers around Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor who immigrates to the United States in order to make a better life for himself. His initial struggles seem to come to an end when he is approached by business magnate Harrison Lee Van Buren with a business proposal, as Tóth undertakes an ambitious construction project that will end up costing him more than he realizes. Featuring other talented actors such as Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, and Stacy Martin, The Brutalist is a staggering and dark story that will leave viewers with plenty to ponder.

With the film hitting Max, there is potential for a whole new audience to find the film, or even potential viewers who were weary of the runtime can now try to experience the movie from the comfort of their home. The movie also recently had a strong presence at the Oscars, where it earned ten nominations, including Best Picture, and ended up taking home the awards for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Brody.

Whether the film ends up becoming one of the top ten trending films on Max remains to be seen. New high-profile releases, especially ones from companies as well-known as A24, tend to experience a surge in viewership on Max, and it shouldn’t be different for a film as talked about as The Brutalist. Amidst all the controversy about AI and its apparent use in the film, Brady Corbet’s latest is a masterful work that should be experienced.
