A24’s Star-Studded Romance Drama Finally Lands a Streaming Release Date

Materialists has finally landed a streaming date. Directed by Celine Song, the A24 feature stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal in a modern-day romance. The film focuses on Lucy (Johnson), a matchmaker who finds herself torn between her feelings for wealthy bachelor Harry (Pascal) and her working-class ex-boyfriend John (Evans). Materialists was one of the buzziest movies of the year, as it was Celine Song’s follow-up to her Best Picture-nominated debut, Past Lives.

Materialists will debut on HBO Max on November 7, 2025, the streamer announced. It will then debut on HBO linear networks starting on November 8 at 8 PM ET. Materialists opened in theaters on June 13, 2025, giving it a 147-day theatrical window and nearly five months before landing on a streaming platform. The film has been available on paid-video-on-demand since July 22, 2025.

Materialists turned out to be one of the surprise hits of the summer movie season. The movie opened to an impressive $11 million in its opening weekend, coming in third behind How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch, the biggest movie of the summer. Materialists ended its run with $36.5 million domestically and $65.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $102.4 million, making it A24’s third-highest-grossing movie behind only Everything Everywhere All At Once and Civil War.

The critical reaction to Materialists was also strong, with the movie earning a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70 on Metacritic. The movie received a B- on CinemaScore, which some chalked up to many audiences expecting a more traditional romantic comedy when the film was instead a romantic drama. MovieWeb’s Will Sayre called the film “another triumph for Celine Song.”

The news of Materialists debuting on HBO Max comes on the heels of the streaming service announcing a new price increase that took place immediately on October 21, 2025. Part of what has made HBO Max such an appealing platform for many film lovers is their first-run streaming access to A24 titles. The company signed the deal with HBO in December 2023, and HBO Max has boosted the profile of many A24 titles. Materialists might not seem like a traditional holiday movie, but its November premiere date means that anyone looking to catch up on some of the best and most acclaimed films of the year before 2026 rolls around.
