A Campy Supernatural Horror Gem Worth Binging on Netflix

The 2015 series Jekyll and Hyde may have been cancelled, but it’s still entirely worth binging. The supernatural horror TV show, which arrived on Netflix on February 1st, 2026, is loosely based on the famous Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1886. Over a century later, this story continues to fascinate for all the right reasons.

Jekyll and Hyde originally aired on ITV in the UK from October to December 2015, but was unfortunately cancelled shortly after in January 2016. The story remains woefully unfinished, with the tenth and final episode leaving off on a bit of a cliffhanger. Still, this gritty, campy supernatural story is the perfect thing for fans of the genre. Jekyll and Hyde isn’t perfect, but its recent arrival on streaming makes now the best time to discover this diamond in the rough.

What 2015’s Jekyll & Hyde TV Show Is About

Jekyll and Hyde puts a spin on the classic 140-year-old novella in that it revolves around the original Henry Jekyll’s grandson, Robert Jekyll. Played by Tom Bateman, Robert was raised by an adoptive family and was unaware of the bizarre rumors surrounding his grandfather and his mysterious friend, Edward Hyde. When Robert suddenly discovers the ability to transform under stress and anger, he goes looking for answers.

Robert Jekyll’s search brings him to 1930s London, where he discovers a secret laboratory in the estate left to him by his grandfather. As he begins to delve into Henry Hyde’s research and the mysteries surrounding his long-missing father, Louis, Robert is pursued by Captain Dance, the leader of a thug organization known as the Tenebrae. Jekyll and Hyde is all mystery and secrets, paired with supernatural horror and good old-fashioned campy thrills.

Jekyll & Hyde Is Still Worth Watching Despite Cancellation

Jekyll and Hyde was victim of a variety of unfortunate circumstances. Such a series is already targeted at a relatively niche audience, so the viewership data was never going to be groundbreaking. The show also had the misfortune of releasing around the time interest in the supernatural genre was in decline. Even Doctor Who, which was in the middle of series 9, saw an unfortunate low in viewership that year.

Another issue with Jekyll and Hyde was that it claimed a slot on ITV that would typically have been reserved for family programming. This resulted in significant backlash since Jekyll and Hyde is a mature horror series full of gory violence. All of this combined meant that the show struggled to find its audience.

On Netflix, Jekyll and Hyde can avoid all these issues. While viewers should know that the various plotlines won’t come to a satisfying close, there’s still a lot to enjoy here. Jekyll and Hyde is a fun twist on a classic tale, and though it can’t be described as high-quality television, its camp and cheese come with their own charm. If you love supernatural horror and aren’t worried about taking Jekyll and Hyde too seriously, you won’t regret dedicating your weekend to this hidden gem.
