Barcelona icon full of praise for La Masia duo, backs team for silverware

Former Spain forward David Villa, currently enjoying a family holiday in Qatar, took time out to visit the Khalifa International Complex in Doha, where he spoke about the current state of FC Barcelona.

The ex-Barça forward expressed his admiration for the team’s style of play under Hansi Flick and predicted a successful season, though he was cautious about making any bold claims regarding the Champions League.

Confident of Silverware

“I am really happy with how things are going, not just because of the results but also the style of play and the way they are performing in every competition,” Villa said, as quoted by SPORT.

“As a Barça fan, you cannot help but enjoy this season.”

Looking fit and upbeat, Villa was optimistic about Barcelona’s chances of lifting trophies, as he said:

“Of course, I believe they are going to win something. It is not just my opinion—they have shown it on the pitch. The toughest part remains, the final stretch across all competitions, but watching them play gives plenty of reasons to be hopeful.”

However, he refrained from picking a favourite for the Champions League title, saying:

“All four teams left are favourites. If they are in the semi-finals, it is because they have earned it. Reaching this stage of the Champions League is incredibly tough,” he said.

Praise for Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi

Villa had no doubts about the impact young stars like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi are making at Barcelona.

“It is not normal. This only happens every now and then. In Spain, we are getting better at developing players from a very young age, which means they are ready much earlier than before,” he explained.

“These are special talents. We have seen young breakthroughs before, Raul debuted young without the same kind of preparation, but these players have a unique ability. You do not play at this level at 17 or 18 unless you are something exceptional.”
