When the season began, Chelsea had no idea what Rick was planning or why he wanted to come to Thailand, and tried to warn him several times about “doing something stupid.” However, when he should have heeded her advice the most in The White Lotus season 3’s ending, Rick ignored Chelsea, culminating in both of their deaths.

Though Rick decided not to kill Jim Hollinger in Bangkok for supposedly killing his father, Walton Goggins’ The White Lotus character went back on that choice after Jim threatened him and insulted his mother. In an impulsive moment of anger, Rick grabbed Jim’s gun and fatally shot him, leading to a shootout between Rick and Sritala’s bodyguards. While Rick killed the bodyguards, Chelsea was accidentally shot and killed in the crossfire. As he carried her body away, Rick was killed by Gaitok, who reluctantly shot him twice. Of course, Chelsea’s words also rang true for Rick’s larger story in The White Lotus. As Amrita tried to inform him during their session together, Rick was responsible for manufacturing, fostering, and exacerbating his pain throughout his life. His misery was an identity that he had created for himself by forcing his father’s “murder” to be the reason he couldn’t love, be loved, or be someone else. Rick chose for his pain to define his story, and he became its victim until the end of his life – only to find out that Jim actually was his father all along.

It was Chelsea’s fervent devotion to Rick that led to her demise in The White Lotus season 3’s ending; had she stayed back at the hotel rather than follow him and try to save him, Chelsea’s death wouldn’t have happened. Chelsea’s story was that she was cosmically linked to Rick and would always try to save and help him, and that became the source of her devastatingly tragic downfall in the finale.
