A Minecraft Movie has undoubtedly been the sleeper hit of the year so far, as after early projections had the movie on track to gross around $70 million its opening weekend, it went on to make $157 million here in North America, and has thus far taken in $313 million around the globe in just a few short days. That’s quite the accomplishment for director Jared Hess, as the total box office take for the family adventure has already surpassed the combined total of all five of his previous theatrical releases, leading to conversations about the inevitable sequel to A Minecraft Movie that’s sure to come.
Speaking with Deadline, Hess discussed what’s to come in the world of Minecraft, teasing the sequel that has yet to be given the go-ahead by Warner Bros. despite the movie becoming a much-needed box-office smash for the company. The director noted that he’s not yet attached to any future Minecraft projects, but would love the chance to play in the world once again. “We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to,” he said, adding:
“I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is Actually Pretty Good, but There’s a HUGE Caveat
‘A Minecraft Movie’ appeals to a very specific group of people, but that’s not a bad thing.
That post-credits tease is what has fans buzzing, and one which gives a strong indication as to where A Minecraft Movie 2 might be heading. “The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft,” said Hess. Indeed, she is that, as Alex was a humanoid character introduced in 2016 to combat gender stereotypes in video games, and she quickly became a fan-favorite in Minecraft. Hess also noted that a potential sequel will definitely have to pay off what we already know.
It’s Steve and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Has Been a Big Hit With Fans
As if its box office haul isn’t enough to convince you that A Minecraft Movie has been a big hit with fans, one only has to look at its Rotten Tomatoes score, which further highlights how much people love it. Despite holding a rotten rating of just 48% from critics, its Popcornmeter sits way higher at 88% from more than 5,000 verified reviews.
“Absolutely an amazing film, didn’t expect it to be this good. Worth watching with the family,” said one user. “Legitimately the best time I’ve had in a theater, probably in my entire life,” added another. Those comments echo many others, who said the theatergoing experience is unmatched, despite the Chicken Jockey controversy that has recently arisen.
Needless to say, it’s clear that things are on track for A Minecraft Movie 2 to eventually come to fruition. How long it takes and what the plot will be is another matter altogether, so until we know more, you can check out the smash hit of the spring playing now in theaters everywhere.
