After premiering in 2023, The Last of Us quickly became regarded as one of the best live-action video game adaptations. A faithful interpretation of the source material, The Last of Us is also no stranger to making distinct changes from the original storyline to better fit the television medium. That will be especially true for Season 2, which introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, one of the new protagonists of the hit drama.
During a press conference for HBO’s The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann confirmed that Abby’s backstory, which will surely impact viewers in a visceral way, will be told much earlier in the show than it is in the video game. For those unaware, The Last of Us Part II spends half the game as Ellie, while the second half is experienced as Abby. It takes many hours before players become aware of the latter’s true motivations, but that won’t be true for viewers who tune into The Last of Us Season 2 in April. As Druckmann explains, there were two main reasons as to why her backstory will be featured much earlier than some expected.
“There are two reasons why we moved certain things up in the story. One of which [is] in the game…you play as Abby, so you immediately form an empathic connection with her because you’re surviving as her, you’re running through the snow, you’re fighting infected, and we can withhold certain things and make it a mystery that will be revealed later in the story. We couldn’t do that in the show because you’re not playing as her. So we need other tools, and that context gave us that shortcut.”
Druckmann also notes that, if they were to stick to how the game told her backstory, “viewers would have to wait a very, very long time to get that context.” But now, instead of getting it spoiled between seasons, fans of the HBO adaptation will learn to understand Abby’s unique motivations sooner rather than later.
More to come.
