Zubimendi in Liverpool’s past as they seek players of new profile

Liverpool have moved on from Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as they seek other required profiles to bolster their squad. The Reds targeted Zubimendi as the priority signing in the summer of 2024, but the Spaniard rejected the lucrative opportunity.

The 26-year-old played a crucial role for Spain in their Euro 2024 victory, followed by the tedious Liverpool transfer saga. The Reds only signed Juventus star Federico Chiesa as the only addition for the current season in a controversial window.

The Reds fans wanted the club to back the new head coach Arne Slot after the last season’s late disappointments. As legendary boss Jurgen Klopp departed the club, Liverpool faced many uncertainties during the transition period with a new boss.

However, Slot surprised everyone with his incredible tactical brilliance and capacity to improve the players he inherited from Klopp. The Dutchman deployed Ryan Gravenberch as number six after Zubimendi’s rejection, using the opportunity to build the young Dutch international.

Gravenberch has played a pivotal role for the Reds in the number six position, displaying fantastic consistency and availability. Meanwhile, Zubimendi has struggled with Sociedad, crashing out of all the competition with no chance of winning any trophy.

Zubimendi’s team has lost four out of their last five games in all competitions, drawing one of those five games. Sociedad are currently 11^th in the La Liga with the chances of qualifying for Europe next season diminishing rapidly.

Speaking on the Market Madness podcast( via GiveMeSport), journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Liverpool have completely moved on from Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi. He said:

“We know about Martin Zubimendi, who Arsenal are working on. They are prepared to either match or trigger the release clause, which is variable if you add the taxes. But from Zubimendi’s point of view, he has to definitively say he’s leaving. Not just 90-95% but 100% and until that happens, Arsenal will be cautious, because Liverpool have been in this position before. But what I can tell you is Liverpool are not actively in the race for Zubimendi anymore, so Arsenal feel they’ve got a bit of a clear run.”

While Zubimendi is a transfer saga that Liverpool and their fanbase have completely moved on from, the Reds need to find the right recruitment profiles next summer. Rest assured, the Zubimendi saga has taught them not to target a player who is not 100% dedicated to the Anfield project under Slot.
