USMNT weekend viewing guide: Head to head

We’ve got some head to head matchups this weekend and the action is ready to roll so let’s get right to it.

Saturday

Hibernian v Celtic – 7:30a on CBSSN

Auston Trusty, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Celtic held their own on Tuesday against Bayern Munich in Champions League play but a stoppage time goal was enough to pull Bayern Level on the day and give them the 3-2 aggregate victory to move on. Celtic were eliminated and will now turn their attention back to league play where they currently hold a 13 point lead over second place Rangers. They will be facing fifth place Hibernian this weekend, who have nearly half as many points as them.

Venezia v Lazio – 9a on Paramount+

Gianluca Busio came off the bench last weekend in Venezia’s 2-0 loss to Genoa, it was the teams third straight loss and eighth straight match without a win. Venezia are still just five points back of safety but will need some unexpected results over the final fifteen matches if they are going to stay up.

Mainz v St. Pauli – 9:30a on ESPN+

Lennard Maloney saw his first minutes for Mainz last weekend, getting 11’ off the bench in the teams 2-0 win over Heidenheim to move into sixth place. Unfortunately, James Sands suffered a nasty ankle injury last weekend so there will be no USMNT match in Mainz this weekend and it looks like Sands will have a long road to recovery.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Augsburg – 9:30a on ESPN+

Joe Scally continues to be Mr. Consistent for Borussia Monchengladbach starting yet again last weekend as Gladbach defeated Union Berlin 2-1. Gladbach are in eighth place, just a point back of qualification for European competition next season as they prepare to host Augsburg where Noahkai Banks saw his six match appearance streak come to an end last weekend as Augsburg played RB Leipzig to a scoreless draw.

Holstein Kiel v Bayer Leverkusen – 9:30a on ESPN+

Jonathan Tolkin has missed the past two weeks due to injury and Holstein Kiel remain in last place though they are just a point back of the relegation playoff spot. They are hosting 2nd place Bayer Leverkusen this weekend who played Bayern Munich to a scoreless draw last weekend to remain eight points back of the league leaders.

Bournemouth v Wolverhampton – 10a on Peacock

Tyler Adams has started six straight matches for Bournemouth who defeated Southampton last weekend to move into fifth place and within striking distance of Champions League qualification. They host 17th place Wolverhampton who are coming off a 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

Fulham v Crystal Palace – 10a on Peacock

Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards meet up as their teams are set to face off on Saturday. Fulham defeated third place Nottingham Forest last weekend to move into eighth place with Robinson once again playing the full 90’. Chris Richards has started seven straight but Palace fell to Everton last weekend 2-1to drop to 13th place.

Torino v AC Milan – Noon on Paramount+

Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, and AC Milan crashed out of Champions League play thanks to a truly silly Theo Hernandez red card and a Julian Carranza goal to tie things up for Feyenoord to advance on aggregate. Milan will now turn their attention to league play and qualifying for next seasons tournament, they are currently in seventh place, four points back of fourth place Juventus.

Borussia Dortmund v Union Berlin – 12:30p on ESPN+

Gio Reyna looks to be getting substitute minutes at best for Borussia Dortmund who have reportedly grown impatient with the 22 year old and are ready to move on this summer. Dortmund advanced over Sporting in Champions League play but are a bit of a mess at the moment, they have lost two straight league matches and four of their past seven to fall to eleventh place in the Bundesliga table, 10 points back of the top four.

Sunday

Getafe v Real Betis – 12:30p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Johnny Cardoso has started eight straight matches for Real Betis who defeated Real Sociedad to move into eighth place last weekend. Top four looks out of reach for Betis but a top six finish and qualification for European Competition looks realistic as they are just three points back. They face a Getafe side that are in fourteenth place but have won two straight matches and haven’t lost in league play since December.

Olympique Lyon v PSG – 2:45p on beIN Sports

Tanner Tessmann has started two straight league matches for Lyon both wins in which his side has scored four goals and correlation is causation. Tessmann’s minutes have not been particularly consistent this season with the past two matches representing the first time this season he has started two straight league matches. Lyon are in sixth place, still within four points of a top three finish that would net them Champions League qualification but they face league leading PSG this weekend who hold a 10 point lead for the league title and have yet to suffer defeat in league play.

Cagliari v Juventus – 2:45p on Paramount+

Tim Weah and Weston McKennie were also eliminated from Champions League play this week despite the two each scoring absolute rocket goals over the two matches against Eindhoven. They were the only two goals Juventus would score in the two legs and PSV would need extra time but eventually defeated Juventus 5-2 on aggregate. On the happier side of things Juventus defeated Inter Milan last weekend 1-0, with McKennie captaining the side, to move into fourth place in the Serie A table. This weekend they face fourteenth place Cagliari who played third place Atalanta to a scoreless draw last weekend.
