It’s looking increasingly likely that Callum Wilson is playing his final season at Newcastle United, and one Premier League club is reportedly eyeing up a move for the striker.
Wilson, who has only just returned from injury and scored in the FA Cup win over Birmingham, has played second fiddle to Alexander Isak for almost of 2024 and 2025.
The England international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and barring an injury to Isak or a miraculous return to full fitness and form, he could be replaced on his way to another Premier League club ahead of the new season…
According to TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook, West Ham are said to be eyeing up an approach for 32-year-old Wilson in the summer.
Crook writes that West Ham are ‘long-term admirers’ of the striker and have made several attempts to sign him in the past, with links stemming back to his time at Bournemouth.
Graham Potter’s side only recently signed Evan Ferguson to a six month loan, but the long term absence of Michail Antonio and lack of a dedicated back up, West Ham are likely to be looking for attacking options at the end of the season.
Few can deny that Callum Wilson has been a tremendous signing for Newcastle since joining under Steve Bruce back in 2020.
But, having missed key opportunities to sell the No.9, perhaps most notably during the January 2024 window right before suffering another long term injury, it would come as no surprise if Newcastle were to let Wilson’s contract expire.
Though Wilson would likely never lose the backing of manager Eddie Howe, his departure makes financial sense in freeing up significant weekly wages and gifting Howe and Paul Mitchell an opportunity to find a younger and more reliable option to compete with Alexander Isak.
Callum Wilson and West Ham is a transfer that could make plenty of sense for all parties involved.
Crooks highlights Wilson’s desire to remain in the Premier League and fight for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, making a starting striker position at West Ham a very attractive option.
A proven goalscorer like Wilson on a free would be an instant and sensible upgrade to West Ham too. Notorious for failing to properly embed strikers from abroad like Haller and Scamacca, a motivated and experienced Wilson could be the catalyst for West Ham to aim higher up the table next season.
That said, we all know what Wilson can do when fit. The question is, at 33 and with his injury woes showing no sign of stopping, can anyone keep his body from breaking down?
