Everton look to sign Carlos Alcaraz on loan

Flamengo say they have agreed a loan deal with Everton for former Southampton and Juventus attacking midfielder, Carlos Alcaraz.

Pending a successful medical, it appears as though the 22-year-old will become the Blues’ first signing of the winter transfer window, just months after becoming Flamengo’s record buy in an €18m deal.

He had previously spent the final six months of the 2023-24 season on loan at Juventus.

Alcaraz began his career at Racing Club in his native Argentina before being picked up by Saints two years ago in a £12m deal.

Article continues below video content

Though the 2022-23 campaign was a relegation season for the south coast side, he was one of the stand-out performers and he was awarded a five-year contract in October 2023.

The deal that took “Charly” to Turin reportedly invoved an optional buy clause of almost €50m but Juve never exercised it and the player made his switch to Brazil last August.

Interesting. Showed some potential at Southampton. A versatile player who could fill a number of positions but is probably best as a 10 or inside forward. Quick, decent on the ball and not too shy of a tackle from memory.

Not sure what the purchase price is but if it’s under £14m then it could be a very sensible move.

Old school that no one seemed to know about this till deal was announced by Flanengo!

Better than nothing or no-one, but I can’t remember him playing for Southampton. Is he any good ? Was hoping for Dewsbury Hall for midfield. Now, if he is on loan, whose loan spot has he used up, Mangala’s or ?

Is he available for tomorrow’s bench ?

Looks a decent signing Lyndon.

Very much can play anywhere, other than LB and CB.

Primarily RFd,but has a decent Left foot too.

At 22 he is at a good age to either to develop or sell on, and he’s not a prolific goal scorer or provider, but he has, looking at his stats, a very good engine for a young player.

Good work team Moywell-TFG 👍💙

His stats are:

played 104

Goals:14.

Assists: 7

Booked: 18

Moyes was probably meaning Alcaraz when he mentioned the quality of player we’ll sign this window due to FFP.

I’m hoping for Carney Chukwukemeka from Chelsea. Cracking player when Chelsea rotated and used him.

Isn’t the limit on loans from English sides only? I heard, or maybe I dreamt it, that we still had some foreign club loan specs left, so not sure it’s a Mangala thing

Sam [3]

I owe you an apology for ‘dropping you in it’ on the other thread, where you said Mangala wouldn’t be recalled.

When I posted on the Transfer Window thread that he wouldn’t, I had read it from French press.

Why he has been recalled is to oversee his Rehab, and as far as I can see, his Loan has been terminated too.

Which thankfully means his wage is off the books, and as such has probably enabled this loan..?

Good wishes Sam.

PS You’re no relation to Col. Mike Hoare are you?

He will do well. Energetic and is better than Doucoure. He should ideally replace him. Midfield of Garner, Gana and Alcaraz looks like a good energetic midfield. Now hope we sign 1 right winger and 1 good striker, we would score more goals and climb up the table.

He is certainly the right age if he proves to be good, towards any rebuilds, should we make his loan a permanent one. Look forward to see what he can offer !

I’ve said for some time we should be looking at more South American talent, so let’s see how this lad does

Other clubs seem to shop from that particular continent and usually you find these lads are technically gifted and have a nasty streak to match a work ethic.

I had to look twice to see the words “attacking midfielder” so it’s refreshing on that front anyway that it’s not yet another holding player.

We are crying out for a new technician in that midfield so here’s hoping.

Svein-Roger Jensen

As far as his style of play goes, Alcaraz is most effective in a box-to-box midfield role, although especially so in an attacking sense, with his high work rate and decision-making blending well to make him influential both in and out of possession. He is a great ball carrier, with good core strength to glide past defenders, and his positive first touch allows him to smartly drive forward into vacant space, with a tendency of going deep into the opposition half whilst orchestrating his team’s attacks, either on the counter or in slow build-up play situations.

Thanks for that snap shot of Alcaraz Svein-Roger. [25]

I’d see him sitting alongside Gueye, with probably Doucs at 10 still, until Jimmy-G is fit, then Charly to 10 and Garner at 8 alongside Gueye.

I doubt he’ll be eligible to play tomorrow (hopefully it’s all been done under the radar and he’s passed his fitness tests and got his playing clearances, but…)

Also, as several have said, what a refreshing change, we sign a player, and the first we fans hear of it is via confirmation we’ve signed him.!

Charly Alcaraz to Everton, “Here we go!”

Deal signed today

PS I wonder if this is the sort of gamble that Moyes was referring to in his presser today?

@Ian 15 Gana has been quite good this season and is very good at breaking up the play. Garner is tidy and keeps the midfield ticking. Alcaraz will be more attack minded and has previous experience in Premier league. He is definitely better passer and more attack minded compared to clumsy & poor Doucoure who has been responsible for killing most of our attacks with poor passing, control or shooting

He looked a tidy player alright, I think he will chip in, but I think he’ll be the type of player to feed our wingers for the ‘Big Chance’ / assist ball.

In any regard, once we have Jimmy back up to fitness and Timmy coming back, he’ll make a superb upgrade on Doucs.

Though in fairness we owe Doucs our PL status and some “good times”. Unfortunately as with us all, Father Time is a cruel parent.

I have a feeling, that with the deal being announced this late on a Friday, it may well be subject to papers and medical first.

He has played twice for Argentina, so that should mean he gets his papers, not to mention he played for Soton.

Just his medical. The fact that he has only had two injuries and just missed 55 days of playing time in nearly six years. I expect him to fly thru the medical too.

A great addition for the FA cup game methinks!

Moyes interviewed in the Guardian regarding the lack of signings:

“It’s certainly not for the want of trying. Undoubtedly we’re still hampered with PSR. I’m really jealous of watching a lot of teams who can attempt to go for players at expensive prices. At the moment, we’re not quite there but we don’t want to get ourselves in a position we’ve been in before with points deductions so we have to be really mindful of what we do. We hope to bring in some players but maybe it’s not the ones who, if we really had the money, we’d be trying to do.”

The Everton manager admits the PSR challenges have increased his admiration for the business conducted by his predecessor, Sean Dyche, and director of football, Kevin Thelwell, to keep the club afloat in the Premier League in recent seasons. “I’ve been really surprised at the way it’s restricting the football club,” Moyes added. “Everton’s a huge football club and should be competing with many of the big clubs in the country and hopefully spending in a way where it’s right and challenging for the big players who are available.

“There’s not that many in January, to be honest, but the PSR is hindering us. I think I can see now why the last few years at Everton have been so difficult. The people who’ve had to work under the restrictions have done a remarkable job.”

Interesting that he apparently wasn’t clear on our situation BEFORE he joined the club.

Dean, if he does as well as relegated Pickford, I will be more than happy.

Worth having a look at at only 22 the sort of younger players fans have been asking for, Guaye and Doucoure are not getting any younger, so this lad might slot in alongside Iroegbunam and Garner for the long term future.

Strange signing if true.

Firstly, does this mean we have managed to cancel someone’s loan? If so, presumably Mangala – because otherwise we wouldn’t have another loan space free?

Otherwise, it kind of illustrates where we are as a club at the moment. Although Alcaraz has some talent and did well at Saints in their last relegation season (6 goal contributions in 18 games), he isn’t now a sought after player.

His career seems to be on a downward trajectory and he’s behind the likes of Buonanotte of Leicester (on loan from Brighton) in the Argentina set-up (in fact Alcaraz has never been capped by Argentina).

Really, we are signing him because he is available – and in truth there probably aren’t many players we would be remotely interested in who are available to us and might actually improve the side. Very, very few.

But, on the upside, he is young – and has possibly just had a series of unfortunate transfers since leaving Argentina as a 19/20 year old. Varela and Danilo were the other two top prospects who left South America at about the same time – and both have done well at Porto and Forest respectively.

Everton could be the right club at the right time. If it happens, I’ll be excited to see him play as the more advanced of a trio in a 433 – and certainly a much more technically gifted player than Doucoure in that role.

Kevin # 94…….I’ve just been watching that. LMFAO at it. He thinks Alcarez should go to West Ham cos they’re in London, jeez, he might as well go and join Leyton Orient in that case! Kept saying Alcarez and his agent would like to go to West Ham, all whilst the player is flying over to England, and the flight will be diverted to London! Yeah right, his contact is always in touch with the pilot, giving him strict instructions on where to go!

Ok, so West Ham are based in London, so what, doesn’t mean any player should go there just because of that. They are a fuck all club,in a shithouse stadium and have won fuck all.

And Paul, # 100…..no they haven’t! He’s not going to West Ham.

Also shows how the management & DOF are dealing with actual possible deals that they can do.
Others that we’ve all mentioned may just be pipe dreams, media bollocks or just us all hoping for players never really in our grasp.

Jeez, here we go again………..the maximum number of players allowed on loan is 4…FOUR… two from this country and two from abroad………

Loans between Premier League clubs and other English counterparts are officially called temporary transfers.

Under the rules in the Premier League Handbook 2024/25 (Download PDF, size: 18.2MB), there are restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

They are:
– Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
– The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
– Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
– A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.

With the exception of Welsh clubs competing in the competitions listed under Rule V.6.2, loans from a club in membership of another National Association do not count towards the above quotas.

MikeG 91. Is that the most experienced PL manager, praising the work done by by DOF ? And of course Dyche, who kept us up against all odd ?

Moyes has looked at the financials and said. “shit !!! How’ve you kept this ship sailing ??? “”

I’m of the feeling Thelwell has provided decent enough players, with the Psr restrictions, it was just the manager that held the team back.

Bit more wiggle room with PSR, better manager, better tactics we could see ahuge improved Everton!

David Moyes’ side already have four players on loan, which would mean one of those signings would need to become a permanent one or go back to their parent club to allow them to bring Chukwuemeka in until the end of the season due to Premier League rules prohibiting teams loaning more than four players at once.

Mike@91, this maybe explains why David Moyes, was a sensible appointment.

Dyche’s football was killing us but managing Everton, was obviously doing the same thing to Sean Dyche, and if he was told there was no money, then I’m glad he did the honest and honourable thing, by telling TFG, that he couldn’t really carry on because of the current debilitating nature of managing Everton FC.

Every game is big, but I personally think tomorrow’s game is the biggest game of our season, so far, because it could really pull us away, or suddenly pull us a lot closer, to the relegation zone.

This knobhead has had a real grudge against Moyes for the past couple of years, and is now spouting shit that Alcaraz is going to West Ham, just because Moyes was offered Alcaraz when he was West Ham manager, but turned him down, and he would like to see Moyes denied the chance to get the player. This is the same West Ham fan who also had inside information on Duran of Aston Villa going to West Ham. That turned out well didn’t it!

Forest signed 6 loan players last season on the books at the same time. Reyna, origi, tavares, riberio, andre, montiel. Some u21 and some obligation to buy I think.

Ipswich currently have 4 loans, and are looking at further loan deals in the striker department. No mention of any loan signings being released. Mckemna doesn’t sound hopeful though.

So either u21s don’t count or overseas loans with an obligation to buy are treated differently. Alcaraz is an obligation to buy interestingly, rather than a straight loan.

Assuming Mangala is terminated, then that is either covering Alcaraz or is indeed another spot. The timing of the announcements will probably highlight this.

Id be very surprised if you could loan 6 players last year, and only 4 this year. The fifa rules didn’t do that for sure, and I’d be surprised if Premier league rules have changed that much this season.

Let’s see.

One other point… this is a really good example of how closedmouthed our new owners and current DoF can be — and how silly so much of the speculation can be — because Alcaraz’ name was never even hinted at by any source anywhere.

Tony #123, great point, although I wonder whether TFG viewed their conversation with Dyche as doing the “honest and honourable thing” because of the clear hostility of the parting. Based on TFG’s terse statement, I’m not sure they would describe Dyche in those terms.

Possibly. Riberio and Reyna were U21.

If that’s the rule, I’d be going hard for Karim Konate out of Red Bull Salzberg on a loan with obligation to buy. He’s U21, Red Bull have been knocked out of the Champions League, and would offer an exciting future.

He’s the type of young and up and coming player we need to be looking at. A good goal scoring record, admittedly in a lower league.

Seems like this one is happening. With a purchase fee around £18m if certain performance conditions are met. Will be interesting to see what those conditions are.

I tend to agree with Robert. It’s a bit of a strange move for a player who’s never really taken off anywhere but still has time to do so. His versatility could be useful to Moyes. Like an Argentinian Philip Neville.

Am curious to see where he fits in and whether the Southampton fans saying he’s got a terrible touch for an Argentine are right or just bitter.

Ian # 131, u21 registered loans are definitely treated differently.

As for Konate – it’s as Mike says he’s seriously injured. Good player but then so was Koita until injured and now he’s completely disappeared.

There’s really only 3 strikers in world football I’d be confident would prove good signings from the off; they are Delap, Ferguson and Giminez. Whether they are really gettable is another matter. They will all cost a much much bigger fee than we’ve spent for about 6 years – and have plenty of options too.

Once you get below £40m for a striker the output is very hit and miss.

I thought before Xmas that this window would need players to move on, to get players in.But the Quick takeover and sorting of finances, vand the PSR being resolved had me hoping.

I did not expect a injured Managla to make way for Alcartz. It is possible that a forward will move so a replacement is brought in.

It’s seems that PSR is still a consideration and trying to work in available players is difficult.
