has finally revealed the meaning behind those cryptic teases of something coming related to The Matrix
, and depending on your own opinion, it is likely to be either really exciting or an utter disappointment. While Smith’s teasing original post lamented him losing out on the role of Neo in the classic sci-fi franchise in a way that had people believing he was either about to star in a reboot of the franchise, a spinoff, or possibly even a Super Bowl commercial, it turns out Smith will play out some Matrix inspired scenes in a new music video for the single Beautiful Scars with Big Sean.
Smith shared the promo art for the single, which is released on January 30, featuring himself as Neo and Big Sean as a Morpheus-style character, finally removing the mystery of the posts he had been sharing throughout the month. The tease began on January 6, when Smith shared a video that delivered the message:
“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down. He chose Wild Wild West, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains,. What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?”
The post sparked a debate over exactly what the purpose of the post was. Did it tease Smith’s involvement in the franchise, which has a new installment currently in development, or was Smith taking over Keanu Reeves’ role for an advertisement for the upcoming Super Bowl? The theory of Smith being involved in the new movie was quickly shot down, with Variety confirming that the new film did not feature Smith in any capacity. That brought many people around to the belief that it was therefore an ad he was working on. Probably the last thing anyone expected was a music project.

It is almost two years since Will Smith found himself being put in the dog house in Hollywood thanks to his moment of madness at the 2023 Oscars ceremony when he slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. At the time, the idea of Smith starring in any big role became a touchy subject, with many in development projects, including Bad Boys: Ride or Die, being temporarily put on hold.

Who knows, if it generates enough of a reaction on social media, anything is possible, and we could see Smith enter The Matrix in some way, even if it won’t be as a major player in the new film.
