The USMNT finished January camp with a resounding 3-0 win against Costa Rica. The lineup chosen by Mauricio Pochettino included a few wrinkles with Miles Robinson starting at right back and Diego Luna in attacking midfield while Zack Steffen made his first start in over two years for the team.
Scoring got off to a hot start with Brian White putting the USA ahead in the 21st minute. Diego Luna set up the goal minutes after coming back onto the pitch after receiving treatment, and a bunch of gauze in his nose, after taking a shot to the face early in the match.
The USA kept the pressure on in the half but it would not be until the 77th minute that the team would find the back of the net again. This time it would be Caden Clark scoring a banger to put the Americans up 2-0.
Patrick Agyemang would put the third goal past keeper Anthony Walker Cruz in stoppage time to make it 3-0.
That would be the final score as the USA capped off a solid if not borderline impressive pair of three goal performances. The only real blemish would be the goal conceded to Venezuela. This isn’t something that is often said about the most meaningless of meaningless friendlies, but the Americans won the games playing fun, attacking soccer. While the rosters for all teams involved were not the first choices by any means, it’s much better for the Stars and Stripes to come out of January camp with solid wins rather than, say, losing to Slovenia.
