‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Wicked’ Dominate 2025 Oscars With Most Nominations

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have finally been announced after a short delay due to the recent fires in Los Angeles, and the controversial Netflix musical Emilia Pérez has made history by setting a record for the most nominations for a non-English language film with 13 nods. The French production of the Spanish-language musical crime thriller racked up all kinds of accolades on the festival circuit before it was released on Netflix back in Nov. 2024, and after having taken home four Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, its Oscar chances are now better than ever.

Despite the controversy surrounding the film in the LGBTQ+ and Latine communities, and over the recent revelation that AI was used in the production, Emilia Pérez earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) Adapted Screenplay, Music (Original Score), Makeup and Hairstyling, Cinematography, International Feature Film, Film Editing, Sound, and two nods for Music (Original Song).

‘Emilia Pérez’ has been polarizing and was received poorly in Mexico over its cultural representation.

Another musical, Wicked, is hot on the heels of Emilia Pérez with 10 nominations. They’ll compete in the prestigious category of Best Picture, while Cynthia Ervo will go head-to-head with Gascón for Best Actress, as Ariana Grande and Saldaña battle it out over who will take home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress. They’ll also compete for a number of other awards, including Music (Original Song), and Film Editing.

‘The Brutalist’ Could Beat Both ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Wicked’

All that being said, Brady Corbet’s epic period drama The Brutalist also earned 10 nominations this morning, and could snatch the award for Best Picture away from both Emilia Pérez and Wicked. It has already won the trophy for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, so look for it to be a tight race this year with other films such as Anora, The Substance, and Conclave also competing in the same category.

Elsewhere, A Complete Unknown took home eight nominations, including ones for Best Picture and Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor. The religious political thriller Conclave also earned eight nods, including ones for the aforementioned Best Picture, Ralph Fiennes for Best Actor, and Isabella Rossellini for Best Supporting Actress. Anora came away with six nominations, while The Substance and Dune: Part 2 both earned five, including ones for Best Picture, and Demi Moore’s first ever Oscar nod for Best Actress (fingers crossed she wins!). Bringing up the rear was Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu with four nominations in the expected categories of Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Cinematography.

Needless to say, this year’s Academy Awards is a tight race with a lot of good films competing in the same categories, so it’s now in the hands of the voters to see who comes away with what statues. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and will be the first ceremony in its long history to be both broadcast on ABC, and simulcast on Hulu at the same time.
