Fire and Ash’ Post-Production Is Ahead of Schedule

James Cameron
has given Avatar
fans the kind of update they have been waiting for. With the director deep in post-production on Avatar: Fire and Ash
, his new comment about the movie actually being “ahead of the curve” as it looks towards its December 2025 release is promising news for the future of the franchise. The 13-year wait between Cameron’s original Avatar and its sequel suggested that his overall plan for at least three more sequels would potentially end up taking decades to realize, but with Avatar 3’s progress moving along at speed, the future entries could all make their planned release dates with ease.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Cameron shared an update on the new addition to the Avatar franchise that he seemed unable to believe he was actually giving. Addressing the current production schedule, the director said:

“It’s in strong shape, I think. We’ve doubled the number of shots finished at this stage of the game than we had on movie two [and] the films are about equal length. So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before. [It’s] a little bit less nightmarish. We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at this.”

This is certainly positive news for fans of the multi-billion-dollar franchise. Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in cinemas on December 19, 2025. If things continue going to plan, Avatar 4 will follow on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031. While the release of the fifth movie seems like a long way away, it is worth remembering again that it took Cameron 13 years to deliver Avatar: The Way of Water. If his timeline holds firm, he will have produced three films in just nine years.

How Are James Cameron’s New ‘Avatar’ Sequels Being Produced So Fast?

For James Cameron, technology has always been his ally and his curse. The director has constantly been at the cutting edge of on-screen visuals, but that meant he had to wait a substantial amount of time for CGI graphics to catch up with the ideas in his head. This was true of Avatar, and of its sequel.

However, while working on Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron was already shooting footage for its sequels. By the time the 2022 movie hit cinemas, almost two-thirds of Avatar: Fire and Ash, and some of Avatar 4’s footage had reportedly been filmed. This certainly gave the new movies a head start that The Way of Water did not have the luxury of, and that is partly why Avatar 3 to Avatar 5 will release at more reasonable intervals.

The third film in James Cameron’s groundbreaking ‘Avatar’ franchise will feature an entirely new villain.

There will still be a four-year wait between Avatar: Fire and Ash and Avatar 4, but as has been pointed out recently by The Batman director Matt Reeves, it takes an average of five years to develop and release a movie sequel. With this in mind, the four years to 2029 will be offset by just a two-year wait for the fifth movie’s arrival. Naturally, these dates could still change, but thanks to Cameron’s latest update, everyone can have a little more faith in the franchise sticking to its path.
