Charlie Cox is undoubtedly best known for playing Matt Murdock, the blind vigilante patrolling the streets of Hell’s Kitchen (not the Gordon Ramsay restaurant), New York, as Daredevil, in the appropriately titled hit series, Daredevil. Cox is set to return as Daredevil, this time with his own series in the MCU, when Daredevil: Born Again premieres this March. But, years before he wore Murdock’s red suit, Cox was best known for leading a cult-classic adaptation of a beloved fantasy novel. Stardust, based on the eponymous novel by the disgraced author, Neil Gaiman, featured an all-star cast, with Cox front and center, and it’s found a new streaming home.
Stardust is now streaming on Paramount+. Released in 2007 and directed by Matthew Vaughn, Stardust is a fantasy romance film following Tristan (Cox), who promises to the love of his life, Victoria (Sienna Miller), that he’ll retrieve a fallen star from the magical kingdom of Stormhold. The movie is fun, fantastical, and incredibly British in its tone and humor. The most impressive part of Stardust is by far its cast. Alongside Cox and Miller, Stardust also stars Claire Danes, Henry Cavill, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kate Magowan, Ben Barnes, Mark Strong, Robert De Niro, Rupert Everett, Mark Heap, Ricky Gervais, and David Kelly, with Ian McKellen narrating.
Stardust received decent reviews when it was released. The movie sits at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a much higher 86% audience score. Renowned critic Roger Ebert scored the movie 2.5/4 in his 2007 review, writing, “The movie is not boring, just cluttered and not focused enough.” He continued:
“There is a kind of narrative flow that makes you want to be swept along, and another that’s just one thing after another. Stardust is fun enough the first time through, but it doesn’t pass the Derek Malcolm Test: ‘A great movie is a movie I cannot bear the thought of never seeing again.'”
Charlie Cox Returns as Daredevil in the MCU
After starring in Stardust, it took Charlie Cox some time to find his footing again as a leading actor. The actor starred in everything from an episode of Downton Abbey to Boardwalk Empire. But, when he first appeared on-screen as Matt Murdock in 2015’s Daredevil (which was originally released on Netflix), Cox hit the big time once again. In an ever shifting genre, Daredevil remains one of (if not THE) greatest superhero TV shows ever made. When Daredevil came to an end in 2019 after three seasons, fans were desperate to see Cox return, and hopefully in the MCU.
