Warning: Spoilers for Severance Season 1.
Arguably one of the best series currently out there, Severance is finally returning to Apple TV+ after a three-year hiatus. Ahead of its release, the highly anticipated second season already has a nearly perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t surprising. Hailed by audiences and critics alike, the science fiction psychological thriller is unlike anything else currently streaming. The series follows a group of workers employed by a large biotechnology corporation known as Lumon Industries. However, no one knows what they do every day upon arriving at work. Thanks to a procedure known as “severance,” once Mark (Adam Scott) and his coworkers descend the elevator in Lumon’s building, an implant inside their mind is activated, and their work consciousness takes over.
Referred to as “Innies” and “Outies,” each consciousness is completely unaware of what the other does. When at the cult-like company, the Innies can’t remember anything about their Outies and their life outside of work. Essentially two people inside one mind, they never meet. As a result, each one experiences an entirely different life with distinct personalities, desires, and goals. Following the abrupt disappearance of Mark’s (Adam Scott) friend and boss, Petey (Yul Vazquez), in Severance’s first season, things at Lumon begin to shift. Then, after a rebellious new employee named Helly (Britt Lower) enters the fray, the Innies begin to question everything. With the series finally returning with its second season, viewers might actually get an answer regarding that massive cliffhanger.

What Happened At the End of ‘Severance’ Season 1?
By the time Severance Season 1 reaches its finale, the Innies have become disillusioned about their jobs and want out of their situation. Perpetually at work, they decide to figure out what’s really happening at Lumon Industries and work to get outside. After learning of the overtime contingency, they’re able to wake themselves up on the outside and manage to discover a bit of who they really are just before Seth (Tramell Tillman) shuts it down. Helly discovers her Outie is actually Helena Eagan, the granddaughter of the founder of Lumon Industries. During the brief moment she’s awake, Helly sabotages Helena’s speech at a Lumon Gala. Instead of promoting the severance chip, she speaks out against it and exposes herself as an Innie as she details the terrible consequences of the procedure.
While Helly’s true identity was undoubtedly quite a shock to viewers, Mark’s discovery raised the most eyebrows by far. After his Innie wakes up at his sister Devon’s (Jen Tullock) house, he tells her who he is and details the horrible misdeeds of Lumon. She believes him and encourages Mark to expose Lumon to the press. She also tells him about his wife Gemma’s death, although his Innie understandably doesn’t remember her. However, shortly after Devon leaves the room, he sees a picture of him and Gemma, who turns out to be Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman), another Lumon employee with an Innie. Mark then runs to tell Devon, and just after he’s able to shout, “she’s alive,” the overtime contingency is deactivated and his Outie regains control, completely unaware of what just transpired. Arguably a great cliffhanger, audiences are eager to see what happens next, especially after waiting three long years.

Is Anyone New Joining the Cast This Season?
Already stacked with a stellar cast, including Patricia Arquette, Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, and Michael Chernus, Severance Season 2 will be welcoming a few familiar faces to the show. Gwendoline Christie, John Noble, Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban, and Merrit Wever will all be joining Lumon Industries this season, which bodes well for the Innies still working to rebel against the juggernaut that is Lumon. New faces may or may not rally behind their cause. However, only time will tell. Severance Season 2 will arrive on Apple TV+ beginning January 17, 2025, with new episodes premiering every Friday.
