When Jurassic Park
was released in 1993, the film became an instant box office and critical success. One of the greatest dinosaur movies of all time, the film put prehistoric beasts on screens in a way that had never been seen before – and despite advancements in technology, nothing has really bettered it. However, over time, science has proven that the dinosaurs of John Hammond’s ill-fated tourist attraction are not quite as accurate as they could have been. At least until now.
Thanks to an incredible new video by 3D artist CoolioArt, fans can see what two tense velociraptor scenes would have looked like if the creatures had been designed the way paleontologists now believe they actually appeared – with feathers and a more bird-like genetic make-up. The velociraptors of Jurassic Park are classic lizard-like depictions of the vicious beasts, and this discrepancy was explained away by Michael Crichton’s story featuring dinosaurs that had been created using a mix of dinosaur and frog DNA, and put together in a way to please visitors to the park.
CoolioArt’s project is a painstaking recreation of the climactic scenes of Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece: the tense kitchen encounter and the iconic battle between the T-Rex and the raptors amid the wreckage of the Jurassic Park visitor’s center. Using a combination of Blender animation and Adobe After Effects, the new video puts a more accurate version of the dinosaurs into the classic scenes for all to enjoy, with more on the way.
Feathered Dinosaurs are Rare in ‘Jurassic Park’
The debate about whether some classic dinosaurs such as the T-Rex and velociraptors had feathers or not is one that has been argued for decades. While Jurassic Park plays fast and loose with scientific accuracy when it comes to its dinosaur designs, those versions are so ingrained in pop culture that they will probably never fade away. However, replacing velociraptors with Deinonychus antirrhopus, a feathered dinosaur of the dromaeosaurids family that velociraptors also belong to, delivers a very different scene to the one that enthralled children and adults alike over 30 years ago.
The dinosaurs of the Jurassic Park franchise have become icons in their own right, especially those such as the T-Rex (affectionately known as “Rexy”), velociraptors, and dilphosaurus from the first movie. While it is hard to now mess with these designs – regardless of what science says – subsequent movies have steered some of the new dinosaurs featured in the saga in the direction of their bird-related “real” counterparts.

The video is an intriguing “what if” scenario, and the work that has gone into recreating the scenes is nothing short of a labor of love. While Spielberg’s movie is pretty much a perfect film in every respect, for those who have always wanted to see their accuracy gripes being addressed, now you can.
The Jurassic Park franchise will continue this year with Jurassic World: Rebirth, the seventh installment overall, and fourth in the Jurassic World saga. Seemingly leaving behind the characters of the past, the new movie is directed by Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards and stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey in an adventure that is said to take the saga back to its roots. The film is released in cinemas on July 2, 2025.
