While many thought that Toy Story 4 could serve as a good enough conclusion to the series, Disney and Pixar have other plans. Toy Story 5 was announced at D23 in California last year, along with story details that teased the toys’ struggle with their owner Bonnie’s love of technology. It seems that this latest Toy Story film is being made as a way to reflect the current generation of young people and their tendency toward playing with a tablet, as opposed to a toy.
In an interview with Good Morning America (via Collider), Tim Allen, who voices the iconic Space Ranger toy Buzz Lightyear, gave some small but interesting details about Toy Story 5, saying:
“I’ve already begun, I’m in the third act now. It’s remarkable what they’ve done… with Pixar they didn’t say I couldn’t say anything but… I wish I could… There’s a lot of real intrigue with Buzz. Jessie’s got a big trouble, she needs help, so it’s a really cool thing. You know I’m a sci-fi guy and always think, with Star Wars, ‘did you go too far?’ and some people think we went too far with [Toy Story 4].”
While Toy Story 4 was a moving film, much of the focus had shifted to Woody (Tom Hanks) as he struggled to find purpose in life after Andy, with Bonnie becoming less and less interested in playing with him. Because of this, Buzz played a much more minor role than in previous films. However, given Allen’s comments, it seems that we can expect Buzz to play a bigger role, specifically in a plot point involving Jesse (voiced by Joan Cusack).
‘Toy Story 5’ will Feature More than One Buzz Lightyear
Given that Buzz Lightyear is a popular toy in the Toy Story Universe, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the trope of other Buzz action figures being involved in the story will continue with Toy Story 5. While Toy Story 2 featured one new Buzz that also didn’t know he was a toy, and Toy Story 3 had a funny story beat involving Buzz in “Spanish Mode,” this upcoming fifth film will feature an army of malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear action figures, as revealed in concept art released last year.

Toy Story 5 is set to hit cinemas in 2026, and it will be calling on a long-serving Pixar stalwart to helm the new installment.
Whether this army of Buzz figures will play into the “trouble” that Jesse finds herself in remains to be seen. Still, it’s exciting to know that characters like Buzz and Jesse, who were somewhat sidelined in the previous film, are going to be more prominently featured in the upcoming fifth installment. There are still so many story details we don’t know yet, but Allen’s comments about the “intrigue” surrounding Buzz help to make this sequel feel a bit more worthwhile.
Despite the powerful and emotional ending that Toy Story 3 brought to the series, Toy Story 4 surprisingly justified its existence with a moving story about Woody’s search for purpose. All that remains to be seen is if Toy Story 5 does the same in telling a story worthy of the characters who helped to revolutionize the medium of computer-generated animation.
Toy Story 5 will open June 19, 2026.
