Couples won’t just have to worry about reservations and flowers this Valentine’s Day, but will also need to keep an eye out for anyone trying to pull them apart – graphically speaking. Get ready to scream this Valentine’s Day as a couples-centric slasher film makes its way into theaters. In preparation for its theatrical release, Sony just dropped the first full trailer for the upcoming slasher film Heart Eyes, starring Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt.
From the producers of Scream, Heart Eyes marks a new take on the horrors of Valentine’s Day (aside from all the societal pressure, of course). Looking like a creepy artist’s rendition of the heart-eyes emoji, the new slasher on the scene is picking off couples every time Cupid’s holiday rolls around, but this time it’s a little different. When Gooding and Holt’s characters find themselves next on the couple-hating killer’s list, the pair decide to try to put an end to the bloody Valentine’s Day sprees.
While new slashers are usually heavily scrutinized by horror fans, often compared to the classics like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, Heart Eyes has a promising crew behind it that might dispel some of your worries. Co-writer Michael Kennedy, known for his work on Freaky, and Josh Ruben, director of Werewolves Within, are two good reasons to be psyched for this slasher. Whether the slasher formula of the old days can even hack it in the modern movie market is still up for debate, but bold creatives like Kennedy and Ruben are proving that slashers are here to stay.

‘Heart Eyes’ Makes a Bold Impression With First Trailer
After a short teaser at the end of last year, the first official trailer for Heart Eyes is finally here, which you can watch above. The trailer shows off the enigmatic glowing red eyes shaped like hearts that, while instilling fear, also come off as slightly inviting. The new slasher is a knife-wielding, nonverbal (as far as we know), masked figure reminiscent of the favorite heart eyes emoji that will make you proud be single this Valentine’s Day.
Director and actor Ruben is bringing the horror skills he’s developed over his tenure in the scary movie scene to the script written by Kennedy, Phillip Murphy, and Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. Produced by Spyglass Media Group and Divide/Conquer, the next holiday-themed slasher also has a talent-packed cast with Devon Sawa from Chucky and Final Destination and Jordana Brewster from The Faculty rounding out the ensemble.
With classic Valentine’s Day horror flicks like the 1981 shocker My Bloody Valentine already in fans’ hearts, there’s hopefully room for another love-themed killer. Regardless, Heart Eyes is shaping up to be the perfect date night film. Get your tickets for its release on February 7, and maybe just fly solo this Valentine’s Day.
