We Were Pushing Society’s Buttons

Nosferatu star Lily-Rose Depp opened up about her controversial and short-lived HBO series The Idol, saying she, co-star The Weeknd, and writer-director-producer Sam Levinson were intentionally pushing society’s buttons with its sexual content.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Depp revealed that the most upsetting aspect of the show’s critical backlash was the negative comments about Levinson:

“I think the thing that sucked about that was to have people talking s**t about Sam, who is a great friend of mine and somebody that I consider family… I’m super close with him and Ashley [Levinson] – his wife who’s a producer on the show – and they are such wonderful people, like, so incredible, so kind, and really kind of took me under their wing in a way.”

Depp has always defended Levinson, even after a 2023 Rolling Stone exposé revealed allegations he created a toxic work environment on the show and was relying on gratuitous sex and nudity as a crutch. The actress disagrees, stating:

“The only thing that was upsetting about that whole time period was people talking negatively about him, because the things that they said about him, particularly, as a filmmaker, just couldn’t be further from the truth… So that sucks. You just never want to hear people talking s**t about your friend.”

Still, Depp acknowledges the inevitability of controversy with a show like The Idol, which aims to shock and discomfort. She continued:

“In a way, it was surreal, and not because we always knew it was going to be controversial… you’ve gotta be expecting that in a way, and that’s okay. I’m interested in that kind of work. I’m down for that. I think we were also, like, pushing society’s buttons intentionally a little bit, in a way, and of course, it was received in the way that it was, but it’s okay.”

Depp Calls Her Time on The Idol “A Real Growth Period” as an Actor and a Person

Depp is so fond of her time as Jocelyn on The Idol, that she credits her work on the series with informing and enhancing her performance in Nosferatu. In an interview with Indiewire, she stated:

“I definitely feel like the physical work that I did on ‘The Idol,’ and the emotional work as well, definitely played a part in preparing me for this one [‘Nosferatu’], because it just taught me so much. Honestly, [‘The Idol’] was a real growth period for me as an actor and as a person. I feel like I just learned so much doing ‘The Idol’ that I carried [it] with me to ‘Nosferatu.’ I feel like every role that you play teaches you something and nudges you along your way on your kind of artistic path, if you will.”

In 2022, it was announced she’d be starring in The Governesseses, a new film from director Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man in San Francisco), appearing alongside Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) and Hoyeon (Squid Game). Not much else is known about the project, and there hasn’t been any news about it recently.
