Kraven the Hunter
just can’t catch a break. After its terrible opening weekend projections have proven to be even worse than expected, its critics’ Rotten Tomatoes score has plummeted, and Sony dropped the bomb that they are not planning on putting out any more Marvel movies in the foreseeable future, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson
movie has taken another beating thanks to its dismal CinemaScore grading.
While some believe that Sony will return to the world of Marvel (outside their work with Marvel Studios) sooner rather than later, there are certainly no plans for more Spider-Man Universe movies in the next year, meaning that Kraven the Hunter was set to be the flag bearer of a funeral procession. That is pretty appropriate because what is happening right now really does feel like there has been a death in the family, and everyone is just accepting the inevitability of another demise approaching.
Even though Rotten Tomatoes audiences have delivered the film a favorable 71% score, those who have shared their views with CinemaScore on exiting theaters on opening night have delivered a less than glowing response to the film. CinemaScore essentially gauges how much a film has lived up to the expectations of audiences. For Kraven the Hunter, this has resulted in a C grading, which is not only poor, but so poor that it comes in below the C+ grade received by both Morbius and Madame Web.
Can ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Catch a Break?
Perhaps in many ways, the writing was on the wall for Kraven even before Sony suggested that they are taking a break from more movies featuring Spider-Man villains. When Venom kicked off the franchise in 2018, the strong box office performance gave Sony the impetus to start developing what appeared to be a Sinister Six crossover movie featuring some of the worst of Spider-Man’s villains. This plan became even more likely when Morbius was finally released in 2022 after several delays, and included a post-credits scene that (inexplicably) put together Jared Leto’s Morbius and Michael Keaton’s MCU character Adrian Toomes aka Vulture to discuss teaming up to take on a Spider-Man that had yet to put in an appearance in that universe.
Now, discounting the Venom franchise, Sony has not made any attempt to connect their movies to each other, with Morbius, Madame Web, and now Kraven the Hunter, all standing alone and, quite frankly, dying a quick and painless death. It is easy to write off Kraven’s chances to make a big impact at the box office even just after a few days on release, but that doesn’t mean it will not find some success – probably very soon – on streaming.

Despite already playing one Marvel character, Aaron Taylor-Johnson insists that there’s no crossover with his upcoming role in Kraven the Hunter.
Morbius and Madame Web both discovered a new audience when they dropped on various streaming platforms after their theatrical runs had ended. Kraven the Hunter will likely do exactly the same. The problem is, that was not the plan. Kraven, just like those who came before, was meant to cash in on the popularity of Spider-Man. Now it looks like the most it can realistically expect is a belated few days at the top of the Netflix chart early in 2025.
