Gary King is a villain on Below Deck Sailing Yacht because of his past behavior, but I’ve changed my mind about him and think he should return for season 6. The South African First Mate has been heavily criticized for years, and admittedly, much of the buzz surrounding him raises eyebrows. He’s a consummate flirt, but Ashley Marti’s seduction of a drunken Gary wasn’t his fault. However, Gary has put himself into other unsavory situations that bring into question his treatment of other women, even in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5.
Gary used to be the bad guy, but lately, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher could become a villain. She openly dislikes her stews, Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and neglected to clean up the blood stains thoroughly after Gary’s drunken night. I think Gary is gearing up for his redemption arc after a bumpy couple of seasons, whereas Daisy is struggling after her iconic love triangle with former Chief Engineer Colin Macrae and Gary. Now that Daisy and Gary will be rooming together, hopefully, they can keep their troublesome natures in check. Will Gary redeem himself?
Gary Is Focused More On Work Than Romance On BDSY Season 5
He’s Keeping His Desires In Check
For once, I noticed a shift in Gary. He’s usually more focused on his sexual and romantic exploits than his job, but this season, he’s putting in the work to be the best First Mate possible. He and Captain Glenn Shephard have always enjoyed a positive relationship, with Captain Glenn giving Gary ample chances when he messed up. Their close relationship as colleagues has only grown in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 as Gary keeps his head in the game and attempts to retrain troubled Deckhand Emma Crouch, who unfortunately had to be fired in the previous episode.

Gary’s work ethic has often suffered in the past when he was invested in his romantic exploits rather than doing his job to a high level. For example, Gary has a propensity towards drinking way too much, and nobody works well when hungover. When Gary drinks, as Daisy pointed out in a recent episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, he becomes a different person. Gary gets incredibly focused on wooing women and even gets angry and irritable with his friends. While he’s not on his best behavior all the time, he’s overall less involved in the drama than usual.
Daisy and Gary rooming together could be production interference made to stir up drama between them.
Gary and Daisy rooming together in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 could become a problem given their romantic past. Additionally, editing suggests Gary’s feelings for Daisy could get in the way of his newfound professionalism. After Daisy confronted him regarding his lack of support in the wake of her breakup with Colin, he admitted in a confessional that he was still attracted to Daisy. As he drunkenly used the bathroom on camera, he also called Daisy “sexy.” However, for now, I think his focus on work will save his reputation.
Gary Showed Compassion For Emma Following Her Firing Episode
He Felt Bad That He Had To Fire Her
The drama with Emma has taken up much of Gary’s attention so far in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, but he didn’t like the way things went down. His reaction made me think differently about Gary. In a touching and genuine Instagram post, Gary showed compassion for Emma following her onscreen and emotional firing. “What an amazing person you are, sorry things happened the way they did,” Gary captioned, featuring a photo of him and Emma smiling on the beach while enjoying drinks.
“You can’t teach someone who doesn’t want to be taught. You did what was best for the safety of the crew + guests. It would have been irresponsible to keep her on.”
I’m not the only one who’s charmed by Gary’s new persona. “Your heart is gold Gary….I truly hope Em can reflect on the why’s…our biggest lessons and self growth come from our challenges,” wrote one fan in the comments, while another said, “Gary you handled the situation with Em with class… not everyone is a fit.” It seems like most fans are on Gary’s side with his decision to bring Emma’s issues to Captain Glenn’s attention.
Gary Has The Respect Of Captain Glenn
They Have An Unbreakable Bond
Gary has Captain Glenn’s respect, which means he’s unlikely to get fired. If Gary was going to get fired, it would’ve already happened. As almost everyone knows by now, Gary was accused of sexual misconduct by former Bravo employee Samantha Suarez during last season’s filming. According to Samantha, Gary drunkenly tried to get her into his room when she was asked to escort him back, but she couldn’t escape him. Gary denied all accusations, and Bravo cleared him of wrongdoing, though they uninvited him from BravoCon 2023.
Captain Glenn trusts Gary to keep the sailing yacht running smoothly while he’s at the helm, and he can do his job well. Even when Gary crashed a tender early in the season and got blood all over the white couch, Captain Glenn easily forgave Gary. Therefore, I think Gary’s place in future seasons is solidified, for better or for worse.
Gary Is Somewhat Likable This Season
He’s Entertaining And Charming
Gary hasn’t been particularly likable in the past, but this season, I think it’s much easier to root for the former Below Deck Sailing Yacht badboy. He handled the situation with Emma the best he could. She was incompetent and lazy, with Gary giving her multiple chances to improve. Gary’s patience began to wane, and he had to prioritize guest safety and enjoyment. In the past, Gary wouldn’t have been so understanding with an incapable deckhand, and his patience proves his growth.
Additionally, while Gary kissed Danni in a moment of drunken weakness, he admitted his remorse and went to Daisy with his concern. He also expressed to Danni that their romantic connection was short-lived, and she shouldn’t expect a boatmance in the future. While Danni is disappointed, it proves Gary is intent on becoming a better person, leaving his womanizing persona in the past. Gary might not be the best Below Deck Sailing Yacht cast member, but I’ve changed my mind about him. He deserves to return for next season.
