“One to keep an eye on” – Newcastle considering move for Galatasaray star?

Newcastle have reportedly become the latest club to show interest Galatasaray star Baris Alper Yilmaz.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a potential move for the 24-year-old, who caught the eye at Euro 2024 with a number of all action displays for the Turkish national side.

A few months later, his name has popped up once again in gossip columns as Newcastle assess their options ahead of a potentially crucial January transfer window.

Toon scouts in Turkey?

According to TBR’s Graeme Bailey, Yilmaz is open to a move away from the Super Lig to the Premier League in January and is a player Newcastle are “doing work on” after sending scouts to watch him in action recently.

“He’s a really interesting one to keep an eye on,” Bailey told Geordie Boot Boys. “He’s in really good form this year. A lot of Premier League clubs like him a lot, and he wants to come to England from what I believe.”

“He’s a real talent. Can play anywhere across the front, and would tick a lot of boxes for Newcastle United. A very interesting player and someone who Newcastle are doing work on, like a lot of other clubs. Keep an eye on him in January. He is a very interesting option for a number of teams.”

A good fit for Newcastle?

With seven goals in 22 appearances this season, including the recent winner for Galatasaray against Sivasspor, Yilmaz certainly looks to have a goalscoring edge to his game that is sorely lacked on Tyneside.

Watching Euro 2024, his work rate and energy stood out, along with his ability to play down both flanks. While it’s quality that we really lack down that right, pressing and versatility often appeals to Eddie Howe, as shown with the signing of Anthony Gordon.

Yilmaz would be a far more PSR-friendly option to the likes of Bryan Mbuemo and Antoine Semenyo, who the Magpies may find themselves priced out of signing after each player’s own strong start to the season.

Links to Yilmaz come after The Telegraph revealed that Johan Bakayoko of PSV was emerging as a target heading into January, suggesting the club are starting to focus on overseas talent.

With recent press rumours linking another Turkish attacker, Arda Guler, with a temporary move away from Real Madrid and to Bayer Leverkusen, perhaps Newcastle could also look to the Spanish capital for a loan deal that could offer a short-term solution to a long-term problem.
