Ryan Reynolds Once Pitched a ‘Bambi’ and Deadpool Crossover Movie to Disney and Marvel

Ryan Reynolds Once Pitched a ‘Bambi’ and Deadpool Crossover Movie to Disney and Marvel

Deadpool & Wolverine proved that Ryan Reynolds and Disney can make magic together, but it seems that not all of his ideas are welcome. While appearing on Variety’s Actors on Actors with Andrew Garfield, Reynolds revealed that he suggested making a movie that really didn’t float the boat at the House of Mouse.

Before he was able to settle on the right project to bring Deadpool into the Disney family, it seems that Reynolds had some other ideas…including an unexpected crossover with a sweet little deer. The conversation went a little like this:

REYNOLDS: They were incredible partners. It was meant to be, because the first pitch I had for Marvel and Kevin Feige five years ago was a Deadpool-Wolverine movie in the “Rashomon” style, which is his perspective, then mine, then an objective. And they said no. So then I pitched the most idiotic movies. One was a Sundance movie I pitched them — no special effects, no conflict. And then I pitched one where it’s a two-hander with me and the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom. Their answer was “We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan.”

GARFIELD: It’s weird that you’re the first person to have pitched this.

The idea of Reynolds’ Wade Wilson sidling up beside Bambi’s mother’s killer could certainly have produced a unique movie, but this is Disney at the end of the day, and even though Deadpool & Wolverine managed to get away with a lot this past summer, it seems there was a line that could not be crossed under any circumstances.

Bambi Will Be Destroyed in an Upcoming Movie Regardless

Even though Disney will not allow anyone to touch their version of Bambi, unfortunately for the deer lovers of the world, the original novel that the film is loosely based on is in the public domain. The 1922 novel Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten is about to receive a very different adaptation as part of the Twisted Childhood movies coming from Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey creator Rhys Frake-Waterfield – and there is nothing the House of Mouse can do about it.

Entitled Bambi: The Reckoning, the new movie will be released in February 2025, and will see a mutated version of a grown up Bambi stalking a mother and son as he seeks revenge for the death of his own mother. Like several other offerings from Jagged Edge Productions, which also includes Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare and Pinocchio: Unstrung, the low-budget movie will eventually form part of the “Avengers-style” movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.

The team behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey have revealed their ultimate endgame – an “Avengers style” crossover of twisted childhood monsters.

One thing that is for certain is that whatever Ryan Reynolds was planning to do on a big budget over at Disney could not have been any more bizarre and disturbing than what Bambi: The Reckoning is about to bring to cinemas. Regardless of the fact this is a very, very loose adaptation of the novel and not Disney’s 1942 animated classic, the new movie is going to destroy the image of the sweet young deer and his animal friends forever. Perhaps Disney should have just let Reynolds do it the Deadpool way and have done with it after all.
