How To Read Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta Books In Order

Although viewers don’t need to have read every book in the Patricia Cornwell novel series to enjoy Scarpetta season 1 on Prime Video, it is easy to work out the order in which the long-running series of thriller books takes place. Scarpetta could become Prime Video’s perfect Reacher replacement if the psychological thriller’s first season is anything to go by.

Slick, stylish, and twisty, this adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s novel series of the same name breaks the rules of traditional page-to-screen adaptations. Rather than bringing one of Cornwell’s novels to life onscreen at a time, Scarpetta season 1 adapts both 1990’s Postmortem and 2021’s Autopsy at the same time.

While Reacher could last forever since the show takes the simpler approach of only bringing one book to life per season, there is a lot of merit to Scarpetta season 1’s approach, too. There are currently 29 novels in the Scarpetta series, and the book series is still ongoing.

This means it would take at least 14 seasons for the show to run out of source material at this rate, and that’s assuming Cornwell doesn’t release any new Scarpetta novels in the intervening years. Since the prolific crime author has released around one novel a year since the 1990’s Postmortem, this seems unlikely.

The first novel in the Scarpetta series is Postmortem, which originally focused on a male protagonist until the book’s publishers urged Cornwell to revise the manuscript and highlight its compelling female medical examiner instead. The second book, 1991’s Body of Evidence, cemented Cornwell’s heroine as a beloved mystery protagonist.

1992’s All That Remains, 1993’s Cruel and Unusual, 1994’s The Body Farm, 1995’s From Potter’s Field, 1996’s Cause of Death, 1997’s Unnatural Exposure, 1998’s Point of Origin, and 1999’s Black Notice brought Cornwell and Scarpetta into the new millennium. By this stage, Scarpetta was one of the most popular mystery protagonists ever.

However, Cornwell’s imagination was far from finished with the character’s exploits. After Scarpetta’s first adventure introduced her boorish colleague Detective Pete Marino, her love interest Benton, and her sister Dorothy, later books went on to give Dorothy’s daughter Lucy an expanded role in the novels.

2000’s The Last Precinct, 2003’s Blow Fly, 2004’s Trace, 2005’s Predator, 2007’s Book of the Dead, 2008’s Scarpetta, and 2009’s The Scarpetta Factor saw Cornwell continue the series throughout the 2010s. These novels were followed by 2010’s Post Mortuary, 2011’s Red Mist, 2012’s The Bone Bed, 2013’s Dust, 2014’s Flesh and Blood, 2015’s Depraved Heart, and 2016’s Chaos.

The series then went on its longest hiatus to date, as Cromwell didn’t release a new Scarpetta novel until 2021. Autopsy changed the stories of every main character, drastically rewriting the story of the series with a few major tragedies as well as some unexpected new character pairings.

2022’s Livid soon followed, with 2023’s Unknown Death and 2024’s Identity Unknown rounding out the 2020s offerings of the novel series. Most recently, 2025 saw the arrival of Cornwell’s Sharp Force.

The Inspiration Behind The Kay Scarpetta Character Explained

In the books, Scarpetta’s titular heroine is the Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Virginia. Fittingly enough, Cornwell based the character on the real-life retired forensic pathologist Dr. Marcella Farinelli Fierro, the ninth woman to be certified in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Fierro earned a degree in 1966 and held a fellowship in forensic pathology in the Department of Legal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond from 1973 to 1974. She served as a staff pathologist at Richmond’s Medical College of Virginia Hospitals from 1975 to 1992, as well as working as an academic.

However, it is Fierro’s work on the FBI’s Task Force on National Crime Investigation Center, Unidentified Persons and Missing Persons Files, Washington D.C., since 1983 that inspired Scarpetta. Like Cornwell’s fictional creation, Fierro works with the FBI to identify criminals based on cutting-edge developments in the world of scientific forensic analysis.

An Adaptation Of Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta Books Has Been In Discussion For Over 30 Years

Since Postmortem was such a huge hit, it should come as no surprise that a screen adaptation of Scarpetta has been in the works for decades. The success of The Silence of the Lambs saw a huge uptick in interest in serial killer thrillers throughout the ‘90s, as evidenced by movies like The Bone Collector, Se7en, and Copycat.

A movie adaptation of a Scarpetta novel was planned around this time, with future The Substance star Demi Moore in the lead role. However, the project never came together, and the adaptation then went dormant until 2009. Around this time, franchises like CSI, Criminal Minds, and Law & Order had proven there was interest in a screen adaptation of Cornwell’s creation.

Scarpetta Review: Nicole Kidman Anchors Prime Video’s Wild New Crime Series

Prime Video’s new crime series Scarpetta is anchored by Nicole Kidman’s magnetic presence, a grounding force amidst a wild story, for better & worse.

Although Fox reportedly secured the rights to turn the novel series into a show, no such series ever came to be, and the Scarpetta adaptation lingered in Development Hell for another decade and a half before director David Gordon Green’s starry Prime Video series finally came together. Now, Scarpetta season 1 can finally introduce viewers to Cornwell’s beloved novel heroine on screen.
