Qatar Stars League resumes despite continued unrest in the Middle-East

March 12 – Football returns to Qatar on Thursday as the Qatar Stars League resumes following a nationwide suspension triggered by regional security concerns linked to the recent U.S. – Israeli military campaign against Iran.

Domestic sport across the country was halted on March 1 after Iranian missile and drone strikes led authorities to close Qatar’s airspace, prompting the Qatar Football Association to postpone competitions “until further notice”.

The shutdown came amid widespread flight disruption across the Gulf, as several countries activated air defence systems and airlines were forced to divert their usual routes.

Now, with security conditions seemingly stabilising, Round 18 of the league – originally scheduled to begin on March 5 – will get underway a week later than planned.

The Qatar Stars League Foundation said the restart has been coordinated with security authorities and other stakeholders, with new precautionary protocols – agreed following a workshop involving match organisers – introduced to protect players, officials and operational staff should any emergency arise.

Hani Ballan, CEO of the Qatar Stars League, said: “These are challenging and unprecedented times for our country. We are grateful to live in one of the safest countries in the world, where strong systems are in place to protect us in situations such as this.

“The safety of our players, coaches, management, medical teams, and operational staff remains our highest priority. Nothing will ever be allowed to compromise their well-being.

“We are pleased to resume our league matches, following strict security protocols, as this marks an important step toward returning to full normality while continuing to observe all necessary safety measures.

“Life is gradually returning to normal, and we remain in close coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure that the highest safety standards are maintained at all times. We extend our wishes for peace and compassion to the region and to the entire world.”
