Liverpool have been urged to consider a sensational move for Chelsea captain Reece James, after former Reds and Blues defender Glen Johnson suggested the England international could strengthen the Merseyside club if the opportunity arose.
Johnson, who played for both clubs during his Premier League career, has weighed in on Liverpool’s defensive options amid ongoing transfer speculation surrounding the club’s long-term plans at full-back. The former England international believes James possesses the qualities to thrive at Anfield should circumstances ever make the defender available.
James has been one of Chelsea’s standout players of the modern era and currently serves as club captain at Stamford Bridge. A product of the club’s academy, he has enjoyed significant success with the Blues, winning the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2021, and later captaining the side to further silverware.
Despite his importance to CHELSEA, occasional uncertainty around the defender’s long-term future has fuelled sporadic rumours linking him with rival clubs. Reports in recent months have suggested the London side are keen to ensure James remains central to their project, with discussions over his long-term future viewed internally as a priority.
Liverpool’s right-back situation has also been the subject of debate among supporters and pundits. Tactical evolution at Anfield and the emergence of younger options have prompted speculation about whether the club could eventually pursue a high-profile defensive signing.
Johnson believes James’ all-round ability makes him one of the most complete full-backs in the Premier League, capable of offering defensive solidity while still contributing in attack — attributes that would suit Liverpool’s high-intensity system.
However, the prospect of such a move remains highly speculative. James’ deep ties to Chelsea could represent the biggest obstacle to any potential deal. The defender has spent his entire professional career with the club and is widely regarded as a symbol of their academy success and long-term identity.
Could Reece James realistically move to Liverpool?
CHELSEA view James as a cornerstone of their squad and a leader both on and off the pitch. With the defender under a long-term contract and the club eager to build around him, there is little incentive for the Blues to entertain offers from domestic rivals.
For Liverpool, signing a player so closely associated with a major Premier League competitor would likely require a huge transfer fee and a willingness from the player himself to leave west London — both significant hurdles.
In reality, Johnson’s suggestion may reflect admiration for James’ talent rather than a deal that is genuinely close to happening.
