Roma defender Jan Ziolkowski, after a less than convincing start, is slowly climbing the ranks under coach Gasperini.
The Polish centre-back was the protagonist of a long interview given to the Polish national team’s YouTube channel, in which he spoke about his relationship with the Giallorossi coach and how his arrival in the capital was.
“If I weren’t ambitious, knowing I could afford a great career, I wouldn’t have moved. The club is fantastic and the fans are top-notch. This is my first season here, let’s see what happens.”
“I’ve already shown in a few games that I can play at this level and do well, even against opponents like Juventus and Inter. I know I can sit on the bench sometimes, but sooner or later you get your chance, like when Ndicka left for the Africa Cup of Nations. I know myself and I know what I’m capable of.”
“Legia Warsaw asked Roma to loan me to them for this season, so I could gain some experience. I would have been bought by Roma, but I would have continued to play for Legia. We talked about it, and I said, “Wow, fantastic! I’ll go to Roma and play for Legia for another season, and I’ll help them win the league.”
“Before the start of the season, there were these expectations. But for Roma, it wasn’t even a topic of discussion. They told me, “We’re taking you because we need you this season. The minutes you play depend on you, on how you present yourself, and on how your opponents present themselves in that area of the pitch.”
“I was in constant contact with Sporting Director Massara, and we even spoke a couple of times. We didn’t discuss the details too much; they explained their intentions to me, said they were willing to sign me, and I waited for the clubs to reach an agreement. I also spoke a couple of times with Gasperini when they first called me, then I arrived in Rome about three weeks later. During that time, I continued to play for Legia Warsaw because we had important matches.”
“Gasperini? I like him. always clear and transparent. In the first leg against Cremonese, I received a yellow card and was substituted at halftime. Gasperini then spoke to me and explained his reasons; he was afraid we might be left with 10 men. I understood his intentions and really appreciated it.”
“Ndicka, Hermoso and Mancini? Each of them is good in one area, I have a good relationship with them, they help me and give me advice. We’ve been conceding more goals lately, but we still have a good defense, also thanks to Svilar, who is a world-class goalkeeper.”
