‘The Bride’ Bombs As ‘Hoppers’ Breaks Pixar’s 9-Year Box Office Streak

‘The Bride’ Bombs As ‘Hoppers’ Breaks Pixar’s 9-Year Box Office Streak

It was boom and bust at the box office this past weekend. The ambitious new horror movie The Bride! tanked pretty hard, taking in just $7.3 million domestically and $13.6 million globally on a budget of $90 million. That was below even conservative estimates from independent tracking services, which predicted a haul of between $10 and $15 million domestically.

The lofty cost of The Bride! raised eyebrows from the start given the high-concept premise: Jessie Buckley plays a dead woman resurrected to be a companion for Frankenstein’s monster in 1930s Chicago. The two go on a Bonnie-and-Clyde-esque spree throughout the country as the Bride inspires a feminist uprising. There are also dance numbers. Actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, best known for her roles in movies like Secretary and The Dark Knight, directs. This is her second feature after 2021’s excellent The Lost Daughter. That movie was an intimate drama that didn’t make much money at the box office; but then again, it also cost a lot less to make and was distributed in the United States by Netflix, which isn’t big on theatrical runs. Warner Bros. stands to lose a lot more on The Bride!, which has divided critics. Pretty much everyone agrees that the movie is bold and brave, but they disagree on whether many or any of its ideas land.

Per Variety, Warner Bros. put out a statement about the box office returns: “In an increasingly ‘risk-averse’ business like ours, we believe the business is better served with studios taking bold swings on originals like this one. Even the 1927 Yankees had 44 losses that season.”

At least they have a good attitude about it. It is a little disappointing to see Warner Bros.’ nine-movie box office winning streak, which has been going strong since the release of A Minecraft Movie last year, come to an end. The studio has had hits with original horror movies like Sinners and Weapons along the way, but The Bride! may be a shade too experimental to bring in wide audiences.

‘Hoppers’ is Pixar’s Best Performing Original Movie in Years

The Bride! actually came in third at this weekend’s box office. Scream 7 took second place in its second weekend with an additional $17.3 million from the domestic market. That’s a sharp 74% drop-off from its first weekend, but the latest entry in the long-running horror franchise has already brought in a total of $149.4 million at the global box office on a budget of $45 million, so it’ll be fine.

The undisputed winner of the weekend was Hoppers, the latest animated feature from Pixar. Hoppers made $46 million at the domestic box office and $88 million globally. It still has a ways to go to recoup its $150 million budget (which is actually on the cheap side for Pixar), but considering how recent animated family movies like Inside Out 2, Zootopia 2, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have kept drawing audiences to theaters long after they debut, Hoppers shouldn’t have anything to worry about. GOAT, an animated movie about a goat who wants to become a sports star, is proving that by coming in fourth place on its third weekend; to date, it’s brought in $146 million from the global box office on a budget of $80 million.

In fact, there’s probably a lot of celebrating at the Pixar offices right about now. While the studio has had plenty of success in recent years with sequels like Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, its originals have languished. That can be excused to some extent for movies like Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022), which were released straight-to-streaming during the pandemic (2020’s Onward, which also performed, wasn’t released straight to streaming, but it did come out in March of 2020, just as the pandemic was spreading aggressively), but the problem goes deeper than that. 2025’s Elio was a failure at the box office, grossing just $154 million on a budget of $150 million. Even 2023’s Elemental, which went on to be a financial success, had a rough opening.

‘Hoppers’ Lands One of Pixar’s Best Rotten Tomatoes Scores of All Time

According to critics, ‘Hoppers’ is Pixar’s best film in years.

But Hoppers, about an animal lover named Mabel whose mind is transferred into a robotic beaver so she can talk to other animals about the destruction of their habitat, is off to a roaring start. Reviews have been incredibly positive and, as mentioned, animated family films in general are performing very well these days, so the movie may have come along at the right time.

“This is a fantastic original film from the incredible team at Pixar, and it’s wonderful to see audiences coming out with their friends and families to enjoy it together,” said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. “Congratulations to our director Daniel Chong, our producer Nicole Paradis Grindle, and our talented cast, along with Pete Docter, Jim Morris, and everyone at Pixar, on a tremendous launch.”
