Spoilers ahead for ‘Ted’ Season 2!
Season 2 of Seth MacFarlane’s Ted prequel TV series is now streaming on Peacock, two years after Season 1 dropped. Set in 1994, Season 2 follows MacFarlane’s Ted and Max Burkholder’s young John Bennett in their senior year of high school, all while John tries to get a girlfriend and learns more about being an adult. While much of this story focuses on real-world problems and challenges, some of the storylines go to the fantastical side for the young boy and his talking teddy bear.
One of those episodes centers on Dungeons and Dragons, which has been one of the world’s most popular role-playing games since its introduction in 1974. When Ted and John embark on a unique quest to get weed money, this mission also brings the rest of their family into play, making for some hysterical shenanigans.
Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Ted Season 2 stars Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach discussed their experience in the Dungeons-and-Dragons-centric episode. Asked about when Matty and Susan stop questioning the insanity of the game, Grimes explained that Susan just wants to be with people, while Matty wants nothing to do with the game whatsoever — but that dynamic is crucial for the story:
Grimes: I mean, I think that comes from Susan wanting to hang out. I don’t want anything to do with it. I’m just doing it for her. But that’s what really makes that episode for me is, even in the scene, you might go, ‘Matty, sit down,’ or whatever, and we do it. Would you want to commit to that stupid wig I have to wear for a long time? I think Matty hates it, and you need that. You need that [curmudgeony] person, while everyone else is into it. But that episode, we had a blast. We worked hard on that episode.
Ubach: Oh my gosh, it was phenomenal.
Grimes: Just be honest, how sexy did Ubach look as that, whatever, knight, whatever you were, that was beautiful.
Episode 3 delivers one of the craziest stories the show has told yet, with Ted, John, and their family donning costumes fitting the world of the game. Matty’s seen in a set of Friar Tuck robes and a bald spot, while Susan wears a full set of knight armor and wields a sword. The group has to fight their way through a troll and other obstacles, making for pure hilarity while Matty grumbles and groans the entire time.
While a Season 3 renewal for Ted has yet to be announced, this season offers new heights of humor for fans of the show. Throw in the episode about John and Ted using a phone sex line, and the one centered on Blaire dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, and Ted Season 2 holds nothing back.
Ted Season 2 is now streaming on Peacock.
