March 6 – Lionel Messi became the latest football player to meet with Donald Trump after the US president feted Inter Miami and the Argentinian at the White House on Thursday.
Trump wanted to commemorate Miami’s MLS Cup Triumph, but soon expanded on the war with Iran. He had entered the White House press briefing flanked by club owner Jorge Mas and Messi, regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.
Messi and the rest of the Inter Miami players stood on stage as Trump congratulated the team before turning his focus to talk about Iran.
Trump said: “The U.S. military, together with the wonderful Israeli partners, continues to totally demolish the enemy far ahead of schedule. We are destroying more of Iran’s missiles and drone capability every single hour … We want to fight now more than they do. We’ve had 47 years, depending on the way you count it, 47 years of horror with this group.”
The briefing resembled the awkward encounter between Trump and Juventus during last summer’s Club World Cup when the Italian team were guests at the White House. Then the press were focussed on whether was going to bomb Iran or not, and Juve were caught in the middle.
Mas presented Trump with the pink shirt of Inter Miami with the number 47 and Messi gave him a signed ball.
“Leo claimed the 47th trophy of his incredible career – the most of all time. You could have gone anywhere in the world, any team in the world, and you chose Miami. I just want to thank you for bringing us all on this ride,” said Trump.
“I shouldn’t say this because I’m old, but I watched Pele play. I don’t know, you may be better than Pele. Pele was pretty good.”
