Prime Video’s All-Star Cast ‘Mad Dogs’ Is the Best 2010s TV Remake Thriller

Based on the 2011–2013 series of the same name, Mad Dogs premiered on the streamer in 2015. It had a decent critical reception, and today it sits at 68% on the critics’ score at Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is higher, at 82%. It also holds 7.5/10 on the IMDb rating. These numbers are not bad at all, but Prime Video canceled the show, and it never returned for another season. Nonetheless, it is one of the best and most compelling mystery shows of the 2010s.

The vacation bliss only lasts for a single episode. One character gets murdered by a masked figure, and the rest are shocked to realize they could be implicated as possible suspects. As they attempt to escape Belize, they find out the victim was involved in a shady criminal operation and a mysterious figure named Jesus starts threatening them. Unable to leave the country, the group searches for a way out, and ultimately realizes their only chance at survival is to stand up and fight.

Yes, it presents itself as a comedy thriller with a premise that’ll remind you of The White Lotus (vacationers dealing with an unexpected death), but the tone slowly changes into something much more unsettling. As the series navigates into its last episodes, Mad Dogs gets sinister and is not afraid to touch on some nerves. Needless to say, you may feel deeply uncomfortable and squirm in some moments.

It’s Hard to Find a Better Ensemble Cast Than the One in ‘Mad Dogs’

The all-star cast is led by the always trustworthy Steve Zahn, who keeps delivering Cobi’s one-liners even in the darkest moments of the story. Malco steps away from his usual comedy persona and gives himself the chance to explore his dramatic range. Imperioli plays the most interesting character – a middle-aged man whose frustration becomes visible as he fights for survival. Chaplin, who played Zane’s character in the original British version, is also outstanding as the pragmatic and rational leader of the group. The supporting cast includes notable performers such as Ted Levine, Phil Davis, Allison Tolman, and Maria Botto.

Mad Dogs relies on the chemistry of its cast to keep things interesting throughout the entire run of the series. Though it gets a bit repetitive at some point when unveiling the many layers of the plot, the show stays fresh by constantly exploring its main characters and their backstories. Eventually, new revelations emerge, and they become part of the show’s mystery element. Not only will viewers try to figure out a way for this group of friends to escape, but they’ll also question if these friends are loyal and trustworthy enough to stay together to the very end. Some decisions will surprise you.

The 2010s had major TV remakes like Lost in Space, V, and even The Twilight Zone, among others. However, most flew under the radar. Mad Dogs can be added to the list of series that no one seems to remember and streamers haven’t renewed in terms of licensing. Even though it is an original production, Prime Video has taken it off its library, and today it is only available for rent or purchase on digital platforms. Nevertheless, this one is worth the money.
