United going on to win 2-1 against the odds.
So what about these ‘controversial’ incidents…
Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about these Newcastle United v Manchester United controversial incidents:
INCIDENT:
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe thought it was a poor decision by referee Peter Bankes to send Jacob Ramsey off for supposedly diving, after showing him a second yellow.
That sentiment was echoed on Soccer Special by former Premier League referee Mike Dean and pundit Clinton Morrison.
DERMOT GALLAGHER:
“I back the referee because of the angle.
“Does he have to do that? Is he caught? No.
“He goes down so far after the incident has happened, and I don’t think he needs to.
“I would also suggest that if he hadn’t have got a yellow card for that, people would be screaming and saying we don’t want diving.
So Peter Bankes has taken positive action, so back him.”
INCIDENT:
Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Anthony Gordon was brought down by Bruno Fernandes.
DERMOT GALLAGHER:
“It’s a tackle he didn’t have to make.
“His colleague is there to back him up but he takes him across there.
“It’s unnecessary and it’s a penalty.
“A good spot by the referee.”
