According to SPORT, a technical delegation from FIFA will begin a detailed inspection tour of candidate venues for the 2030 FIFA World Cup across Spain and Portugal next week.
And, as per the report, one of the key stops will be Barcelona, where inspectors will examine the progress of the renovated Spotify Camp Nou.
Camp Nou a contender to host 2030 World Cup final
The visit to Barcelona is scheduled for March 9, and the goal is to evaluate the stadium works first-hand.
After all, the stadium is expected to become the largest football venue in Europe once completed and is considered one of the leading candidates to host the final of the centenary World Cup.
FIFA will also inspect other major venues, including the Santiago Bernabeu, the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, La Romareda, Estadio de Gran Canaria, Estadio de La Cartuja, Riazor Stadium, San Mames, and Anoeta.
In Barcelona, FIFA will also evaluate the RCDE Stadium as a potential secondary venue.
Although the final list of venues will not be confirmed until December 2026, the revamped Camp Nou is already seen as one of the strongest contenders to host the World Cup final, competing mainly with the Bernabeu.
FIFA will analyse infrastructure, construction progress, logistics, and legal and fiscal frameworks before selecting the final host venues in December 2026.
Progress of Camp Nou
The inspection arrives at a crucial moment for the Espai Barça project. According to updates from FC Barcelona and statements from ex-president Joan Laporta and vice-president Elena Fort, the stadium works have advanced significantly.
The third tier of seating is progressing quickly, and the facade panels are visibly rising. The immediate objective is to reach 62,000 spectators once the Barcelona city council grants the Phase 1C occupancy license, which will reopen the Gol Nord section.
Ultimately, the stadium will reach a full capacity of 105,000 spectators. However, the installation of the roof remains a challenge, which will take time to complete.
