Don’t see your American AAdvantage status yet? It may still be coming

Don’t see your American AAdvantage status yet? It may still be coming

I will almost certainly have Platinum Pro status in American Airlines’ AAdvantage program in 2026. My account just doesn’t show it yet.

I’m not alone.

At the start of March, many American Airlines flyers who qualify for status at the last minute via credit card spending typically have to wait a little longer to get the good news about their status achievement.

Here’s what’s going on and what to expect over the coming weeks.

How last-minute American Airlines AAdvantage status qualification works

American’s status qualification year runs from March 1 through the end of February the following year.

So, this week, every AAdvantage member’s stash of status-earning Loyalty Points reset to zero.

But for American Airlines cardholders, their 2025 Loyalty Points are still being counted, so to speak.

It’s an annual exercise, of sorts:

  • All Loyalty Points earned via an eligible American Airlines credit card through the end of February count toward this coming year’s status — regardless of when the cardholder’s statement closes.
  • So, if you spent $5,000 on your American Airlines card on Feb. 28, the Loyalty Points you earn for that purchase will count toward 2026 status — not 2027 status.
  • On the flip side, swipes from March 1 on will count toward your Loyalty Points total for the “new year.”

A mattress purchase did the trick for me

In my case, I spent the past year aiming for AAdvantage Platinum Pro status, which gets me top-tier Emerald status with the Oneworld alliance.

As we hit the final stretch of the status qualification period in late February, I sat at a little over 122,000 Loyalty Points — but needed to reach 125,000.

Fortunately (or unfortunately), as a new homeowner, I had some hefty purchases to make. So, I charged several thousand dollars in expenses to my Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® (see rates and fees) — yes, in a world where airlines have leaned heavily into their lucrative credit card portfolios, a mattress purchase is akin to the mileage run of yesteryear.

Remember: With eligible American Airlines cobranded cards, you earn Loyalty Points on base miles accrued via card spending.

In my case, the home decor swipes were more than enough to clear the 125,000 Loyalty Points benchmark for Platinum Pro. But because my last Citi statement closed Feb. 15, I’ll have to wait a little while to actually see the higher AAdvantage status kick in.

How long will it take? Keep reading.

When will American Airlines post your 2026 status?

Typically, it takes American a few weeks to fully sort through which Loyalty Points rolled in during February and which came in after the March deadline.

Some of that lag involves waiting for its cardholders’ March card statements to post. To that end, expect to see your AAdvantage earnings update sporadically over the course of the month:

  1. Once your March credit card statement closes, American says it will first post the AAdvantage miles you earned for the prior month’s spending (miles are, of course, what you can use to book travel in the future).
  2. Then it will post the Loyalty Points you earned on purchases made between your February card statement close and Feb. 28. Those Loyalty Points, again, will count toward 2026 status.
  3. Finally, it will post Loyalty Points for purchases you made from March 1 on. Those will count toward your 2027 status.

Bottom line

In all, the carrier estimates this process can take up to 10 weeks, but I’d imagine many customers will see this all happen a bit faster.

In any event, if you know you spent enough for status but are still waiting for the email confirming you reached the next tier, stay tuned to your account and email over the coming weeks. It should be coming.
